if you want to increase funding for services, you have several approaches available to you.

one way that is absolutely certain to fail - 100% certainty - is to argue for redistributing money from the military.
in calculating spending, we are not limited to how much revenue we can generate.

we can create as much money as we want.
fiscal conservatism is a form of anti-intellectualism.

listen.

there's piles of studies on this, and it's the reality of the situation.

it's not some irreversible racial characteristic or something, but it is the reality of manufactured consent in a neo-liberal society: brown people vote for brown people because they're brown, and they do that because they're taught to do it.

and, yes, that does create a problem in a party that is ideological, when it gets flooded by new members in a specific community - because they're not voting on policy, but on skin colour.

in the end, the party gets a representative that doesn't reflect it's values, and won't fight for them, because the meetings were co-opted by identity politics.

but, as i stated before: you need to blame yourself. you didn't organize well enough. you didn't show up. you let this happen.
i'm not going to vote for a right-winger just because he happens to be brown.

sorry.
i don't think we should put the government in charge of this.

listen: maybe a lot of these sign-ups are dubious. but, he didn't do this by himself, he had help from the establishment behind him - and this is how establishment politics works (right down to playing the race card when you question what they're doing). read up on the chretien/trudeau years a little, and you'll see how endemic this is in canadian politics.

it might be a little bit new to the ndp, but it's just a part of the process of the party joining the establishment consensus - which has been happening for quite a while, now.

the bottom line is that this is the inevitable result of left of centre voters refusing to take control of their party and direct it. democracy requires participation to work, and if you don't get participation then you don't get democracy.

it's been unclear for years what kind of vehicle the ndp is for the left, in the first place. naomi klein is married to the party's hereditary ruling chief, and she won't have anything to do with them. it's just a bit of a reality sandwich: this party wasn't going to succeed in advancing a leftist vision, anyway. so, you get this feedback cycle, and this race to the bottom.

it seems like the grassroots in the country is more interested in the green party, but they're arguably even worse when it comes to entrenched right-wing interests.

it's no secret what's happening. but, it shouldn't be surprising. in the end, 2017 may be seen as the party's last pretence of leftist sentiment, as they shift to a largely ethnic based moderate conservative party in the model of the american democrats.

well, we know the party leadership wants singh to win, so if there's any shenanigans happening behind the scene, he's the most likely beneficiary.

i have an ideological objection to joining a political party; i'm an anarchist. i never have, and i'm going to need to undergo a kind of conversion process before i ever will. but, it seems like it's a kind of weird and particularly non-transparent process behind this.

they're taking something like two weeks to count the vote by mail. i'd be surprised if there's anything much like a paper trail.

so, we might have to get used to jagmeet singh, after all.

i don't expect him to come up with a set of policy options that i can support - i expect him to continue the party's swing to the right, which is why the party suits want him; it's the point of the whole exercise - but i'll keep an open mind.

we may very well be walking into another election where the ndp are positioned to the right of the liberals.

on second thought, it seems as though i'll be staying in, tonight.

so, i should get some work done.

i still have to build a skeleton of the period 1 disc, but i've done a cursory run through period 2.1 and it doesn't seem like there's a lot to think about it. that pile of aleph discs has passed for a few releases: there won't be another mp3 disc until probably 2003, and 2000 is the lightest year, so i should get a ways into 2001 before i need to worry about another flac disc.

- i'm adding a hidden track to inri036 but don't plan to do any mastering.
- inri037 was left incomplete on purpose, and i'm going to have to ponder it, but don't plan to touch it.
- inri038 needs to be expanded - and i will probably remix the vocal part. i'll be adding 2-3 mixes. it's a different mentality; i'll go over this.
- inri039 is done.
- inri040 can be expanded to include missing tracks (same as 38)
- inri041 is done

there's going to be an extra vocal disc, probably at 42. this is a logical continuation of the process; i've taken three tracks off records (too cold, liquify, book it!) because they didn't fit, but they all fit together. the fourth track to add to this is the vocal mix of ignorance is bliss, which is now left off of deny everything. a fifth track may be a completed 'curious george suite'. the theme here is original vocal prog, and it works quite well, actually, and especially as an intermediary. i would want to sequence it after 'deny everything' and treat it as an unofficial record - lp010, but not an official 5th. that would just be revisionist. but, it seems somewhat essential, too. i split all of these singles off for good reason, but i like the idea of having an lp for each of them, and this is kind of a problem, right now.

i'm toying with doing the vocal 'stuck' after all, but it would need to look towards a vocal jazz comp.

i don't think that this should be very time consuming, but we'll have to see.

first, i need to skeleton period 1, and that should take me most of the rest of the day.
when i sat down to make the ambient works, i wanted a "mix tape" style cd-r of ambient fragments that ran from 1996-2003 as a volume 0. but, when i sat down to actually make it, i ended up with a 90 minute actual mix tape of material from 1996-1999. it actually split itself fairly cleanly into an inri period release, so i've made space for it as a 1999 release.

initially written and recorded between 1996-1999 and remixed between 2013-2015. initially released as part zero of a three volume set on may 21, 2015. split into it's own release on june 14, 2015. finalized as lp008 on sept 29, 2017. as always, please use headphones.

volume 1-2 available here:

this release also includes a printable j-card insert and will also eventually include a comprehensive package of journal entries from all phases of production (2015, 2017).

republishing inri034

this is another lost track that exists in a sort of an ill-defined alter-reality.

it came out of a jam in my basement that fall. i was feeling a little more lonely than usual. see, i was quite literally the only person in my social group that bothered doing grade 13. so, school was converted from my only real social grounding (and i was always an extremely introverted loner) into a place of isolation and alienation. i skipped a lot of classes, actually, in a desire to escape the people. looking back, i sort of regret not reaching out to the people around me a bit more; it would have helped in more than just a social context. but, in hindsight, i'm also able to understand the separation better as one of class; as much as i regret keeping myself isolated, i think i would have been better off not carrying on with school at all.

i mean, i did well. my average was over 90. but i felt hopelessly out of place. i knew i didn't belong there....that they would never accept me unless i became the kind of pretentious jerk i despised. nor did i want anything to do with them, anyways. i really hated the superior attitude that i found myself immersed within. so, i just kept my physical distance and my mouth shut, hoping the condition was temporary (it wasn't).

the flip side of this is that i was also working a part-time job in a fast-food restaurant and i hated it just as much. i didn't fit in any better there, amongst the kids with no aspirations in life except to work in order to exist.

so, i found myself stuck between worlds, not wanting anything to do with either. in both cases, though, what i found the problem was was the people. "i don't mind the job, but i'm repulsed by the staff".

what i really wanted was just to be able to lock myself in a room and never have to engage with anybody ever again. i think that i'm the only person that could have written this. it exudes my idiosyncrasies in surreal, tongue-in-cheek humour. but it's also dead serious.

"i'd rather have a book than a friend.
it's loyalty will never end,
doesn't succumb to fashion or trend,
and all the information it sends,
will never get lost along the way.
when things get as tough as they may,
it will always know exactly what to say,
'cause books don't hurt...
...or do they?"

musically, there's some fancy playing here. everything is completely live: no loops (except the drums, programmed into a 909 emulator). that guitar part is sort of tricky. and check the bass part in the breakdown.

the thing i really like about this the most, though, is the gorgeous kosmische ending section, which is built up on overlapping sixths and is just the most dreamy thing to escape into ever. dramatic ending chord care/of a day in the life.

and, indeed, this is the dramatic ending chord for inri.

this was initially a part of this record:
jasonparent.bandcamp.com/album/inrimake

...but it never really made sense to put it there. that's a remix/cover album, and this is two forgotten experiments. it makes more sense to spin it off here.

this track was meant to be a new beginning, but, instead, exists in a sort of purgatory. musically, it's radically different than anything else labeled 'inri'; thematically, it's a logical extension of inri. i really wanted this to be a fresh start, but in the end i had to leave it in the inri pile. in places it's sort of evil, in other places it's just a little too precious.

my dad swapped houses in mid 99. again. this would be a frequent annoyance over the next few years. i can date this clearly to the summer of '99 as the first thing i did in my new basement. that change of surroundings contributed to the feeling of wanting to do something different...

while it is an original track, it ended up on the covers disc for two reasons. first, the lead guitar loop that cycles through the track came out of a stoner jam session in the basement of a friend of mine. it's sort of hilarious to realize it took three years for another human being to get an influence here, even if it was a throwaway jam session. that was really just an excuse though. the real reason it was on inrimake, rather than on inridiculous, is that it fits in better with the prog theme of that disc than the noise theme of the other one.

the lyrics have been a problem since they were recorded. sex sells. shock sells. i had to psyche myself up to do it. it's all tied together, though. where was i going with this, anyways?

'99 was the summer between grades 12 and 13 ("oac"). yes, ontario had a grade 13. get your laughs in. it was actually a pre-university year. universities would take the grades from the "oac" year as the entrance requirements. we didn't do SATs or anything. most universities have something like this for "mature students"; the weirdness is in making high school kids do the extra year. a few places (like quebec) still have similar types of pre-university screening...

anyways, i'm going into the oac year and i haven't even really given the whole vocation thing a passing thought, other than to reject the idea of defining my life through the concept of labour. there were a few weeks in the summer where i had sort of decided not to go to oac at all. i was actually *excited* about escaping school, focusing on a minimum wage job and spending my free time smoking pot and writing music. i really didn't want anything more out of life than this. and, if i happened to get lucky and sell some records, even better. i was eventually talked down from this position through a process of bribery. that didn't magically construct vocational aspirations, though; i ended up overloading on oac credits for the simple reason that i didn't know what i wanted.

(i ended up grudgingly accepting entrance into a software engineering program, literally switched to cosmological physics within a few weeks, switched to math after that, then bounced around from music to english to women's studies and ...)

so, again, i'm stuck between grade 12 and 13 and really dreading what the future holds. finding a way to sell some music would be an escape from this. i concluded that, tactically, my best approach at the time would have been to focus on something sexually explicit that gains it's power from it's shock value. there's a bit of desperation underlying this.

so i wrote a sort of graphic depiction of sexual domination within a male homosexual context. see, the thing is that it isn't very convincing. it isn't very convincing because it's contrived for profit. i'm being bluntly honest about the logic that produced this track because seeing myself in the mirror like this actually had a large effect on me. once i realized what i'd created, i was completely disgusted with myself. in it's initial form, liquify was the first 3:36 of this track. it sat on my hard drive for several weeks, waiting for me to finish questioning myself - who i was, what i was doing, whether it was worth it.

i came to two conclusions.

the first was that contrived music sucks. i realized i wasn't going to get anywhere faking it, anyways. if i wanted to build an audience, the only serious approach i had was honesty.

the second was that, even if it works, being fake isn't worth it. i was rejecting the beaten path because i didn't feel i belonged on it. accepting some kind of Official Alternative Beaten Path wasn't solving anything.

so, i should just do what i want, and tell anybody that doesn't like it to fuck off.

the second part of this track flowed from that epiphany. it's a pure prog workout, discernible from 1972 solely in it's updated use of technology. probably for the first time, the notes really mean something to me, here. if you listen, you can tell.

the ending scene of the jim carrey masterpiece, the truman show, fades the track out. it's meant to document the importance of the film in helping me work through what i was working through. as of january 2014, i've mildly modified the track to fade out the truman show ending, which was just a little too cheezy & precious.

so, yeah. there's a few more inri tracks. but this is really the point where inri dies.

--

the first five minutes were initially a different track, and are split off here for the final version to document it. i didn't initially commit to this pairing; i always intended to finish the first section as a separate track. it really wasn't until 2014 that i finally decided against it.

the version that ended up on 'inrimake' was a slightly less finished mix than the version that i archived as mp3. i must have further altered the track between the time that i burned the inrimake disc (october, 1999) and the time that i saved the track to mp3 to archive (january, 2000). i didn't notice this when i edited the track in 2014. but, i've brought the newest version in for the final remix.

--

when i ran through the discography in 2014, i stopped on this track for a few days and ultimately had to admit defeat around it. i wanted to turn the vocals down, but the mix was simply too saturated to do anything about it; everything i tried had a set of unintended consequences, and it just seemed prudent to not touch it. i was able to get around these concerns for my final mix, which is dated to sept, 2017. i've also split the instrumental section off and given it the title that i used for early versions of inricycled.

again: i'm not an economic populist, i'm more of an mmt/keynesian type. so, i'm not going to approach trump's tax policies through some filter of mid-twentieth century wild west progressivism, which seems to be the standard reaction on the pseudo-left, nowadays.

the reality is that the united states doesn't need to have taxes at all. it could just print the money it needs. so, it's less that i'm in favour of this or opposed to this and more that i realize that it doesn't actually matter.

will it do any of the things that trump claims? no.
will the united states collapse in some right-wing snuff fantasy of debt porn? no.

will some rich people get to sit on some money that they ought to be spending? yes.

what would i do, if i were the empress? i would take the money out of accounts and spend it. that's what the left is supposed to be about with fiscal policy: we're supposed to be about advocating increased levels of spending.

so, i look at what trudeau is doing and he's getting it wrong: he's taking money away from the right people, but he's not spending it. then, i look at what trump is doing, and he's getting it wrong, too: he's giving spending money to people that don't need it.

but - and i stated this previously - it is actually, in theory, less bad to let the money collect interest than it is to take it out of circulation.

i would advise the democrats to kind of shrug this off, and even try and use it for leverage. if i were a senator, i'd be willing to support tax cuts like this in exchange for increased spending, which in the united states would be mostly about infrastructure.

what's important is not that revenue stays high (that does not matter in a fiat monetary system), but that expenditures remain high. and, the way to get the economy moving is to get the state to spend more - regardless of how much it is taking in. that is what people should be focusing on...
i stand corrected - the kurds do have an ally, after all.

(although the israeli state has not officially recognized the results, either.)

https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/1.812469
the kurds are not voting for independence, so much as they are voting for a war of independence - one that they can't possibly win.

nobody is going to recognize the results of the referendum, either.....although, that doesn't mean anybody is going to step up enforcement measures.

the reality is that they've had de facto independence for years and that the outcome of the referendum isn't actually likely to change very much on the ground, besides perhaps escalate a civil war between capitalist and communist elements in the kurdish population.

they're going to need some kind of breakdown in iran, first.
so, we talked about music last early on monday morning. i made some progress, but the heat was a bit of a problem due to the a/c upstairs (as mentioned, i'm waiting this guy out) and i ultimately had to stop due to interference. the same thing happened yesterday morning, but i think i was able to finish a proper mix this morning.

we're highly tentative around this. i'm going to need to spend the next 24+ hours verifying it.

but, the heat has also lifted, which means i'm pivoting to airing the apartment out and even plan to take a shower in the next 24 hours. i love the heat, but i can't overstate how much of a problem the a/c is. getting the a/c off should get me a bit more productive.

as i was waiting out the interference, i finished a lot of filing and typing, so there should be a quick procession through the end of 1999, as soon as i close inri031.

for now, i need to listen.
this is a picture of a tomb from the very end of the new kingdom period, which is just about the latest period of indigenous egyptian culture that existed - it was shortly after this that the sea peoples invaded and put an end to egyptian civilization as an independent entity. yes: there was a period of fundamentalism and decline before the area was conquered by the assyrians, but the bronze age collapse was really the end of egypt, as egypt.

we can clearly see that, by the end of the new kingdom, the egyptians very explicitly defined themselves neither as white nor black but as brown. they neither saw themselves as the nubians to their south nor as the semites to their east but as something in between - and they were cognizant that this something in between came from mixing.

you can't answer the question, and it doesn't make sense to ask it.

i actually think i've been pretty clear for a long time and from the start: i'm very much an eighteenth century classical anarchist (which was the sister ideology to classical liberalism), tied to concepts of historical progress and obsessed with the epistemological superiority of the scientific method.

i have no interest in structuralism, post-structuralism, post-(post-structuralism) or any other system of thinking that wants to throw away the intellectual rigour of the classical period. i live in the world of bertrand russell and isaac asimov, not the world of michel foucault and angela davis.

so, yes: i'm as staunchly pro-science as i am anti-religion. yes, i think they're in conflict. yes, i think one will have to defeat the other. no, i don't think they can co-exist. and, i'm not interested in organizing with people that think this kind of plurality is possible; i actually consider that to be right-wing, reactionary and conservative.

i want a society rooted in science from the ground up, with the eventual relegation of all religion to the dustbin of history.

and, i think the left ought to be aggressive in pushing forward with that aim. this is a conflict the left ought to relish.

i just ultimately can't grasp why anybody pushing for religious pluralism would choose to identify on the left. it's just simply not a left-wing idea; it's pretty much the definition of the historical conservative movement. the left has always been about abolishing religion; it is the right that has been about concepts of "class harmony".

so, sure: i very well might come off as some old school eurocentric liberal that looks down on half the world as outside of historical progress and in need of serious systemic reform. the reason i would come off that way is that it's actually true - and, i'm not going to apologize for it because i think it's actually correct, and my opponents - people arguing against it - are in truth deep cultural conservatives that want to stop progress and need to be opposed and stopped, using whatever means are necessary.

that said, it's 2017, not 1817. as an empiricist, i have an obligation to look at data that we have available to us today that was not available then and learn from it. we must acknowledge that the methods that the left used in the past to abolish traditional ways of life were not successful, and should be evolved as best they can be.

in the end, i don't have a problem admitting that i'm not on your side, but i will insist that i am on the left, and you are not - and try and push you out to where you should be, rather than retreat to rebuild.
if you want to ensure that you don't get stopped at the border, do the following:

1) be sober.
2) dress like a respectable adult.
3) be honest.

it's your choice of clothing, in conjunction with your skin colour, that is going to get you stopped, not your history of drug use.

if you must show up with chains around your neck, prominent tattoos and messy facial hair, they'll be more likely to let you through if you admit it. the thing that's most likely to get you stopped is if they think you're lying to them - and they will think you're lying to them, even if you're not.

the only problems i've had at the border are with people noticing that i'm tanned, and then questioning me on my status as a canadian. i don't know if they thought i was mexican or something else, but the only reason they've ever stopped me is on that suspicion of lying to them about my citizenship - and this is with advanced clearance.
wrong.

i've admitted marijuana use to border people at least a dozen times, and i was given advanced border clearance.

this lawyer is clueless - and his attitude is exactly what is wrong with this society. it's about discretion. and, so long as you don't look like a thug or a dirty hippie, you'll probably be fine.

i didn't believe it, really.

i guess i thought they'd converge.

but, would hillary get a bill on daca through? or renegotiate nafta? and, would she have invaded anybody yet?

they're all evil. don't misunderstand me, here. but, maybe jill stein was right: maybe the lesser evil was trump, after all.

https://www.counterpunch.org/2016/07/29/85299/
there's a realignment happening.

i was never a democrat, or a liberal for that matter. so, i'm not going to become a republican any time soon. but, i think the lesser evil is flipping.

they set themselves up, man.  don't look at me. i'm just being consistent with my own values. and, the whole thing is flipping over.

"i didn't leave the democratic party..."
yeah.

you know what? it's official.

fuck america. i'm on russia's side. eat it.
personally, i always thought canada had more in common with the russians, anyways.

i'm just barely old enough to remember the tail end of the cold war as it played out in 80s media - the stallones and the arnolds. i was very young; i turned 10 in 1991. and, so, i don't know if it's some kind of ultraparadoxical phase or something, but i never found it obvious that i ought to be cheering for the americans as i was being brainwashed as a young child. it was clear there was something epic going on, but it was less clear which side i ought to pick.

i knew i was canadian, and i knew i had a rivalry with the americans because i was a canadian. i knew far less about the russians. sure - we had common cause in being antagonistic with the americans, so there was the whole enemy of your enemy thing. but, what little bit of exposure i had to the russians just legitimately seemed more familiar a lot of the time.

the hockey. the bears. the outdoors. the economy. and, i'm finnish on my mom's side and native american on my dad's side, so i'm practically russian, right? the natives and the finns both ultimately came from siberia. what i'm getting at is that they even looked more similar; the reality is that you can walk around for days in canada and never meet an african.

i know that the americans are being led down a path with this, but i'd guesstimate that the likelihood of me being swept up into this is...it's zero. there's no way.

but, the decision to get involved in a war of aggression against russia is one of a small number of things that can absolutely ensure i will not be voting liberal....ever, ever, ever again.

i knew this guy was an airhead, but this is beyond reasonable expectations. really. what the fuck...
i, for one, have no interest at all in defending the country from any invasion by the russians.

"dude, the rink's that way. wait, do you want a beer? vodka. right. of course."

we'll kill the generals on our own side.
sending "peacekeeping" troops to ukraine is batshit fucking insane.
the actual reason that i voted liberal in 2015 was due to the proposed green infrastructure bank, which was being presented as a subsidiary of the bank of canada and essentially as a way to print as much money as is needed to get us off the dirty energy.

there were other reasons. my local ndp candidate is a dirty fucking anti-science hippie, and i couldn't - and still won't - vote for her. i have zero tolerance for anti-vaxxers or anti-gmo types. on top of that, i found muclair's rhetoric on oil to be a hundred years out of date - he was still living in the world that trudeau's father lived in, where a strong national energy sector was a blessing to be used to fund social services (never mind the oil curse, let alone climate change). mulcair flatly sounded like he was more interested in maximizing tax revenue from oil profits than he was in shutting the tar sands down.

but, i could have voted green, or not voted at all. i did vote liberal, and the infrastructure bank was fundamental in that. if we could get a good idea or two out of it, right?

unfortunately, this idea appears to have disappeared from the mouth of trudeau, as well as from the party's literature. they've had to squirm out of a lot of broken promises; this is something they just don't talk about at all. it's as though it was never there.

nothing's changed except the urgency of action. and, in the end, my vote in 2019 will most likely reduce to what i think is a best option for carbon transition - although i must state up front that if she manages to win, she's going to have to fight the oil interests out of her own party before she can legislate against them, and i'm not particularly convinced that she would be that option, even if she did win. this is likely mostly just talk....

it was malatesta that pointed out that the employed segment of the working class, itself, actual workers, has practically no revolutionary potential, because it is utterly reliant on the interests of capital - that the class conflict only really works in one direction. capital is consequently seeking for ways to maximize rent extracted from workers, but workers are themselves seeking only to be exploited ahead of each other - because that is what they are, as proletariat. they have no other function in the economy besides having their labour exploited.

a true revolutionary potential must be sought amongst the lumpenproletariat: the unemployed, the student class and other people that do not occupy paid positions within the system.

this is a fundamental insight of classical anarchism: all that workers will ever support is the reactionary and conservative aims of the existing status quo.

offer me solutions, offer me alternatives, and i'll decline...
again: this polling firm is not measuring undecideds. but, you can see from the prime minister question that around 20% is non-committal.

this is a guess, but i would suspect that the data would be consistent if it were presented more rigorously; that you would see that scheer has really not moved, but that trudeau is losing support to "none of the above". we've seen this before - it was predictable.

it's going to be hard to avoid discussing the tax changes as a driver, if it cements itself. but, you should be careful: you're probably going to conclude that it's wealthy people that are changing their votes, and you'd probably be wrong. after all, the whole point of going after 1% of the population is that it's not going to swing the election.

increased enforcement for tax confiscation may hurt the liberal party's finances with the upper middle class, but it's going to be the working poor that's going to switch their votes to the conservatives. we're talking about people with very low levels of education that are easily confused by right-wing propaganda. they don't understand marginal tax rates, or even the basic concept of progressive taxation - they see a tax increase and assume they get targeted, that it threatens their employment prospects, etc. they've been brainwashed for decades with the idea that wealth trickles down from tax cuts, and they actually believe it.

i met somebody working at a subway last week that opposed her own wage increases because she was afraid she'd lose her job. she's going to vote conservative for the explicit reason of preventing herself from getting a raise. that's what happens when you get your information from the sun. the root of the problem is that she couldn't calculate the increased cost to the business on an overnight shift: she thinks $20/night in wages is going to cost her her job at a busy 24 hour fast food restaurant. she honestly didn't seem to be aware of how much money a busy subway makes. and, nobody seems to have told her anything about how a general wage increase should actually increase business.

but, they don't just make them ignorant - they make them angry, too. i bit my tongue. i had to.

if a swing to the conservatives comes out of this, it's going to be in the exact demographic that gerald butts thought he was appealing to - your working poor voters that are literally conditioned by the conservative press to reject anything that might be in their own interests.

cynical politicking has consequences.

the ndp have an opening here, too, but they have to understand their voters better.

the goal at the moment needs to be ensuring that people that gave the state all of their information don't get deported.

these people have a stranglehold on the state.

i don't think that wide open immigration benefits anything or anyone, except capital. open borders is the definition of 'unregulated capitalism'; it's a key plank of neo-liberalism. but, if you find the rules too restrictive - and i actually might not find them too restrictive - then it's your prerogative to attempt to liberalize them over time.

right now, you should support anything that stops the deportation orders.

alright, so...

i am awake, now.

where did i leave off on friday morning? i had a tentative mix of liquify up. i'll need to check that. if it's done, i should get through the paper work around the end of 1999 pretty quick; that will include two more completed alephs and a punt on the period 1 disc. if not, i'll need to finish and move on. it won't be long, either way.

so, expect the next thing here to be a closing of inri031 and to be moving forward into the year 2000 within a day or two.
they're not presenting legal arguments - not citing precedent - but are rather presenting opinions that belong in a philosophy classroom, on some kind of contrived moral basis.

and i'm not even sure that most of them could explain the difference.

if you set up a conflict with lawyers on one side and philosophers on the other, and then ask lawyers to moderate, who do you think is going to win?

like i say - it's frustrating, because they should win the argument, they just refuse to actually approach the situation coherently.
Unlike the administration’s previous travel bans, which were intended as temporary measures as homeland security officials were instructed to review vetting procedures, the new restrictions are not time-limited.

so, if you flip back a few pages, what i argued around the so-called muslim bans was that:

1) they obviously were not "muslim bans" - that argument would fail (and it has failed, because they obviously weren't muslim bans)
2) there was no logical policy connection between a travel ban and public safety, which is the argument they should have presented, and would have actually worked.
3) the information i had in front of me suggested that the president's actions, here, are almost beyond legal scrutiny anyways, so long as the sunset clause exists - all he has to do is cite "national security" and he should basically be permitted to do whatever he wants, so long as it's temporary. basically, you can shut the constitution down for a few weeks, but you can't suspend it altogether.

now, here's the twist: all of the legal battles on the question are surrounding the question of whether it's a muslim ban, which is an unwinnable argument. so, the narrative has constructed itself in a way that makes it seem like expanding it to non-muslim countries will make it harder to fight, as it's now not targetting a specific religion.

except that it was obviously never targetting that religion in the first place, and they were always going to lose those arguments.

if they had presented the correct argument in the first place - which is that there isn't a logical policy objective - this new order would be dead on arrival.

...and it is still the case that this ought to be shut down....

....but, the court process to shut it down has to exist before it can happen, and i see no evidence that this is going to happen.

this is where the rabbit-hole of neoliberalism has brought us to: he will likely get away with exactly the policy that should shut him down, for the precise reason that the opposition has no concept of what the law actually says, because it's been brainwashed with foucauldian drivel.

i might suggest that there is no good reason to sing the national anthem at sporting events in the first place.
the next american constitution should erect an explicit barrier to separate sport from state.

trump is making an inappropriate use of the bully pulpit, and his alt-right speech absolutists should be calling him out for it.

really.

she's a twice failed candidate, and she simply lacks the grace to fade away. she should have the dignity to sit down and be quiet, be she apparently doesn't. so, people are going to have to get up and start walking away, and let her natter on at the moon.

i'm just sick of hearing about her.

sept 20-21 vlog, where i mail a package containing inri011 and inri033 and determine that the n12 was filed without an affidavit.

i split the track up, in the end. i had to. this is the most interesting part.

i'm exiting the inri period, with this. i call it 'period 1'. it ends about the end of 1999-ish. period 2 runs from 2000-2003.

where period 1 was about different types of industrial music - running the spectrum from total noise to fruity synth pop - period 2 is fundamentally a prog period, moving between ideas like fusion, post-rock and idm.

i need to run through this pretty quick to ship some material dated to the end of 2001, and moving into early 2003. this is really the way into it.

something that happened in the late 90s, when fans of bands started getting together and talking on the internet, was the phenomena of the unauthorized remix. schemes were hatched all over the internet to create remix records, tribute discs, fan collaborations and whatnot. in hindsight, given what the internet turned into, it was actually a refreshingly productive use of networking.

different artists have reacted in different ways. i got yelled at by the now deceased singer of god lives underwater for one of these. trent reznor, on the other hand, eventually went so far as to set up a competition (which i didn't take part in, as i'd moved beyond the idea by that point).

once i'd put a few remixes/recreations together, and received more positive feedback doing it than with any of my own songs, i began to realize that if i could get somebody's attention then i could construct myself a launching pad. it seems like that's what a lot of people were thinking; it didn't work out, but i did end up with a number of remixes.

unfortunately, i've lost a lot of them. about a third of them ended up on a cd-r i threw together at the end of 1999. a third just sat on my hard drive, and a third disappeared into the internet. i'm putting them all together here under the title of the 1999 release, 'inrimake'. the initial release ended after "the day inri messed the world up"; the last four songs are 'bonus tracks'. i've further split off the first two tracks to a standalone ep (jasonparent.bandcamp.com/album/liquify), partially because they never fit here properly and partially because it pares the augmented version down to under 80 minutes.

now, i should point out that i was very much going for the *abstract* remix sound rather than the club-friendly mix. you can't really dance to these. you're not supposed to. you're supposed to blare them through headphones and trip out into them.

in terms of my own work, this record very much extends a bridge from the inri period into the deny everything period, to the extent that it arguably realizes the goals of both phases better than either phase does.

this record may be released physically, one day, should the proper legal issues be resolved. right now, i'm only making it available as an almost-free download.

recorded sporadically, and without cohesive intent, over '98 and '99. originally compiled in the fall of '99. augmented and minimally altered in january, 2014. lp006. as always, please use headphones - but note that they are especially mandatory for this recording.

this release will also eventually include a comprehensive package of journal entries from all phases of production (1998, 1999, 2013, 2014, 2017).

no, you were right - i like punk.

but that isn't punk. sorry.
so, i don't know where those numbers are coming from, exactly, but what they're not taking into account is that marijuana is an economy of scale.

a dime bag is usually quite a bit less than a gram, nowadays - typically even pushing towards more like a half a gram. but, the same person that sells you a half a gram of shake for $13 is going to offer you a quarter of dank bud for $60 and that's where you see prices get under $10.

a lot of people are going to be legitimately surprised when they see how big a gram actually is, and happily pay $10 for something they're used to paying $15 for.

but, if the price doesn't scale, the province is going to forfeit the top end of the market, leaving the store fronts to cater to casual users.

https://www.narcity.com/news/this-graph-shows-you-the-average-cost-of-marijuana-across-canada
there's no affidavit on file. what that means is that there is no legal evidence that they require me to move out of this unit - the form is incomplete, and the case will be dismissed.

they could still provide an affidavit. they have until the trial date.

there's two explanations for this, that i can see:

1) incompetence. and, they've demonstrated more than enough of this to consider it plausible...except that they now have counsel, and this would be pretty pathetic if it's incompetence by the counsel. regardless, it could still be coming, and i'll need to call back every day and check to see about it.

2) they never intended this to go to trial - it was a tactic to try and scare me out. in other words, there's no affidavit because there's no family member to move in - it was a bluff, and i've called it.

i need to call every single day. i need to prepare a defence. but, as it stands, they don't have an actual case to present and i'm consequently not under a serious threat of eviction.

so, should i re-open the harassment case? this is my smoking gun, clear as day: an eviction notice without an affidavit is clear and obvious harassment.

1) except for the eviction notice, they've been leaving me alone for the last few weeks.
2) i don't want to present the appearance of lingering conflict - and i can be genuine in avoiding it. the bigger threat is the judge declaring the relationship dysfunctional.
3) i'll be in an even stronger position if i wait it out, as i'll be officially victimized twice and taken advantage of after acting in good faith, the third time. the fourth time will need to be bringing them to justice.

this is counter-intuitive. it's true that they didn't sign the mediation in good faith, but i did. and, so long as they aren't presenting a serious case, i'm better off letting this play out, as it just strengthens my hand.

if this blows over, great - although i'd suspect the judge will award me something as she dismisses the case. i still think they're listing the building soon, in which case i should lay low and wait. and, if they do something stupid, i'll have an easy case, given that i've been so accommodating.

this could change. i'll need to call daily. but, right now, i should wait.

bluff called. i think i'm ok...
except to split out the last track as a single, i've decided not to alter this in any way.

i was moving, conceptually, to more serious styles of music. i wanted to write these epic 20-minute trips that reached into every genre imaginable. you can hear that shift over the last few things i posted, and it really accelerates moving into the year 2000. there wasn't much left of 'inri' by the time i got there.

what i had left was a bunch of noise tracks that i'd been putting aside for a third demo, trinri, that was meant to carry on with the same concept as the first two: "songs" and "collages" would alternate over 19 tracks. the problem i ran up against with trinri was that i was no longer interested in writing songs. what was coming out, instead, were these fifteen minute journeys. that's ultimately the driving reason that i switched things up: the format had worn itself thin.

in an attempt to establish conceptual unity, i pulled the noise collages together (along with some older collages that i had pulled from various sources as far back as my first demo tape) into this thing. i became aware at some point, very suddenly, that the whole idea and product was sort of ridiculous. hence the title.

this recording is consequently void of actual songs. it isn't easy to listen to, and offers few reprieves, but if you're a fan of a specific kind of electronic psychedelia then you may find something of enjoyment here.

written and demoed in multiple stages from 1996-1999. initially constructed in this form in dec, 1999. slightly resequenced in jan, 2014. finalized on sept 19, 2017. this is my third official record; as always, please use headphones.

the last track just got tagged on as an afterthought. it never really fit the theme. so, i've removed it (as of january, 2014) and placed it here: jasonparent.bandcamp.com/album/book-it.

this release also includes a printable jewel case insert and will also eventually include a comprehensive package of journal entries from all phases of production (1999, 2013, 2014, 2017).

i meant to get inri033 printed off on tuesday night, and my first package mailed wednesday morning, but my printer wasn't reading on tuesday night (it turned out my services got turned off, somehow), so i put it down to have a few beers at a local noise show - only to not get home until 7:30. shit happens.

the thing is printed and ready to go. so, that's inr011 & inri033 shipping in the first package, within hours. the next will have what will be something like inri049 and inri057 in it - so i have a lot of liner notes to get through.

i skipped over 31 and 32 just to get the first package out. 32 is download only and will be a quick fix; 31 is going to apparently require a few days to approach. after that, it will just be liner notes for the next 20 or so releases; i'm over the hump, and into material i spent 2014 & 2015 on. it's daylight...

i'm going to have to mail that form this morning, too, as well as figure out how i track down the affidavit in the file.

i should get 32 done, but likely won't be back at 31 until i wake up next.
