no, i'm not a populist, and my arguments are not meant to be interpreted that way. there are sound economic arguments against increasing unskilled labour in a flat, if not structurally recessionary, economy that is moving towards increasing automation. we are going to have increasing problems with unemployment as it is. we don't need more unskilled labour to add to the problem.
it is basic social science to understand that influxes of unskilled immigrants increase crime rates in a stagnant economy. and, it is not controversial to point out that muslims do not assimilate in the same percentages, or that policing will be required to prevent them from breaking the law under arguments of "religious freedom". nor is it controversial to point out that islamic society is intrinsically heteropatriarchal, and that bringing in unskilled refugees is importing and strengthening the heteropatriarchy.
i do not think that refugees are a national security problem. and, i support increasing immigration for skilled applicants. but, i oppose further refugee resettlement at this time - and my arguments are good arguments that should be listened to, and should be persuasive to all but the most fundamentalist conservatives.
