the world thinks americans are stupid.

do they not understand that they're the number one contributor to climate change, by a large margin?

there's not anything we can do up here. we have giant swaths of forests. it's four million square kilometres; that's about 10% of the world's tree cover. our boreal forest is the second largest forest in the world. only the amazon is larger. however, the amazon is a rainforest and canada's boreal forest is relatively dry, and often full of snow. these giant forested areas don't get a lot of rain at any time of the year, ever. climate change - driven largely by the habits of american consumers - has shot the temperature up by well over 5 degrees in some of these regions, which can result in absurd 20+ degree temperature jumps in the spring, fall and summer. as the temperature has gone up and the region has remained dry, these timber forests are literally matchboxes waiting to go up. the population density in these regions is also very low, which makes catching and fighting fires in these dense, dry forests impossible by any other method than air. we often just need to wait for the forest to burn down.

canadians have had serious losses from these forest fires. we've lost major tourist destinations like jaspar. banff and kelowna are disasters waiting to happen. there's been innumerable lost houses and massive amounts of property damage.

when the trees burn down, it sets off a chain reaction in much of the landscape, which is mountainous. the trees keep the land in place. the mountain creates an effect called a rain shadow, which blocks pacific moisture on the east side (making it dry) and creates torrential down pours on the western side. the lack of trees causes landslides which are wiping out infrastructure. that is largely america's fault, and in a global legal system we'd be able to seek damages for negligence.

the only solution to this is going to need to be for weather patterns to shift, which the rockies are going to make extremely difficult. weather generally moves west to east. even if the water starts melting along the coast, that doesn't eliminate the rockies as a barrier. you just get more rain in vancouver.

if the americans want to actually fix this, they'll have to do it using their haarp weather modification systems, which i do suspect are probably real. canada needs more rain to stop it from burning. stop bitching at us and make it happen.
