i very much want to agree with him, and the focus on the people caught between is the right focus, but he continues to (perhaps purposefully, in terms of not wanting to) miss the greater context and why there will not be a peace treaty until one side is victorious in a much larger struggle.

a temporary cease-fire is not impossible, but only under extreme external pressure - popular pressure, perhaps, or maybe the opening of a second front.

i'm not denying that, to syrians, it's about syria. but to the people orchestrating and funding this, it's not about syria at all.
