so, i thought i was coming down with it myself - finally, after trying for months - but i'm congested and sneezing, so it's probably either allergies or the flu.

ugh.
this is zogby, and i'll take it over a media poll any day.

actually, if you check the post-debate national polling, trump gained a few points.

well? check it. it's true.

obviously, the covid-19 diagnosis complicates this, and your guess is as good as mine.

but, how many trump voters watch cnn, anyways? is that a good sample? i guess not...
so, i guess the other winner is ms. may.

it seems like she'll be functionally in charge for quite a while, still.
there's a byelection, like, right away. it's the seat that the previous finance minister was in.

these were the results from last november:
Liberal Bill Morneau 31,271 57.37
New Democratic Brian Chang 12,142 22.27
Conservative Ryan Lester 6,613 12.13
Green Annamie Paul 3,852 7.07

even if the ndp candidate stands down (and it won't), she'll be lucky to come in a distant second.

so, she's going to lose an election within days of being elected leader. and, then what?

it's a giant step backwards in terms of climate advocacy, and that's what i actually care about.
is she going to ask one of the sitting members to step aside?
i mean...

can they find somewhere for her to run and actually win? she won't win in toronto.

i can't think of anywhere that she could run and win.

and, if she can't win a seat, how long does it take for her to resign?
no, listen, this is my concern.

i think that the climate is a populist issue. i do not think that "racial inequality" is anything near as one, or at least not in canada.

so, my concern is that shifting the focus to "racial inequality" is just going to serve as a distraction from the climate, and ultimately chase away voters. as such, we're going to end up with a green party that sounds like black lives matter, and the country is going to broadly change the channel.

and, then emissions will go through the roof, and we'll all die.

and, i wonder if that's the actual reason why she seems to have been able to raise so much money - neo-liberal identity politics are always pushed for the precise reason that they do not threaten the status quo.

again: i want to support a politics rooted in science, not one rooted in faith.

and, right when the green party was ready to break through, it made a choice that will render it irrelevant.
the real winner tonight was justin trudeau, who just saw a serious threat on his left evaporate.
annamie paul spent most of her time campaigning on "social justice" issues, and doesn't really seem interested in the climate.

we'll see how long she lasts.

but, that is not the direction i was hoping the party would move in.
i'm currently watching this, fwiw.

you'll never get anywhere in the democratic party, because you're stuck catering to the conservative instincts of black voters.

but, if the evangelical base is dying, the republican party is up for grabs.
this update corrects the data for avocado, as the value i had plugged in is not reflective of what i bought. the avocados all weighed between 110 and 125 g, not 200 g. so, i'm lowballing at 100 g. data still from the self site [usda]. they're still not ripe yet, but they're closer.

i'm also updating the data for flax to make it a tablespoon.

together, those two changes really dramatically lower the 6:3 ratio, in preparation for a possible soybean caesar dressing. it actually even takes my total omega-6 requirements back into the 75%+ range, meaning my previous concerns about avocados are not likely relevant to this diet, in particular. this is not an endorsement of avocados, and i would still advise being careful with them, but i'm so careful about fat, in general, that i actually need a source of it...

the avocado was brought in to fill the holes for b1, b3, b5, b6, b9, e & f1. after replacing the repackaged skim milk with nutritional yeast, b1 & b6 plugged up, leaving b3, b5, b9, e & f1 - with b5 still not sufficient. this correction takes me further away from b5, and reduces my total daily f1 into the yellow zone, but doesn't affect b3, b9 or e - other than to assert the necessity of the avocado for those reasons, relative to the existing choices.

a little powdered milk will help with b5 & choline and i think that's the right answer.

top line items in green indicate necessary to complete requirements of reasons following in blue, relative to already existing additions. these items are untouchable.

it is not yet clear whether i should return to one banana or not, at this time. it would reduce the b5 that much more, and get me to the yellow for b9. more components are required.

while the reduction in k is the upside of the smaller avocado, it is not enough to bring back a second kiwi.

disclaimer:
i've gone to town with a few things - i'm not making up vitamins but rather filling things in. i mean, there's all these "missing vitamin names". what were they, exactly? it also gives me an excuse to work in a few things like choline that are hard to otherwise define as they are essential in some amount but not technically vitamins.

note that these numbers are scavenged and should be interpreted approximately. that's partly why i'm aiming to overshoot on most of it.

i want to vote for the atheist party that governs based on science, not on faith.

and, i suspect that contemporary republican nihilism is a more direct path to political atheism than contemporary democratic conservatism is.

it just needs the right direction.

so, if it were up to me, i'd let the democrats have the religious right and i'd focus on winning non-religious voters, instead.
so, what happens if we end up with pence v biden?

let's be clear - the republicans don't have to pick pence. that's up to them and, frankly, i'd advise them not to. they're going to be tempted to, though...

i don't think there's any polling, but correct me if i'm wrong.

i'm not actually convinced that pence could win a primary. see, that's the thing we've all forgotten - the reason that trump won was that he was the liberal republican on the ballot, and the party was moving away from both the evangelical right and the anarcho-capitalism of the likes of ted cruz. he wasn't a great choice, but he was actually the best one. trump won the nomination because he was the most moderate, least extreme republican on the ballot.

just a reality check, there.

and, now, the party is finding themselves losing ground on the right to joe biden, who is more appealing to wide swaths of the republican base than donald trump is. meanwhile, the support that trump was able to peel away from clinton by running to her left (and he was, broadly, the more left-wing candidate in 2016 on paper - and he has surprised me repeatedly around things i thought he was full of shit on, like abandoning the tpp and pulling out of the wto, as well as his relatively non-aggressive foreign policy, which i support as a leftist) has largely evaporated - at least for now. that was trump's strength, and he can't win if he can't turn that around.

what i'll say is that i endorsed clinton in 2016 and sort of regret it - i should have endorsed jill stein, instead. and, i'm endorsing howie hawkins, now (so long as it's trump v biden; i'll have to explicitly endorse biden, if pence runs). so, i'd argue his record actually exceeded his rhetoric on these specific issues, and he's increased his standing with me over the last four years rather than decreased it. but, that doesn't seem to be the consensus on the ground - all polling i've seen is clear that biden is doing about as well as obama did with these specific midwestern voters, which pulls the rug out from under trump's chances.

so, the murmuring is that the republicans are scared that trump is going to lose them their base without making any gains anywhere. but, i'm not sure they realize what their base is anymore.

if they run pence, it might help them win in states like georgia and texas by pulling back in some of the wandering conservative vote. but, is that their base? it's going to wreck them in the long run, as pence brings back all of the backwards attitudes into the party that so many people, like myself, who aren't comfortable supporting conservative democrats, were hoping trump was in the process of doing away with. trump hasn't talked a lot about things like abortion and gay marriage; to be clear, he's generally made the wrong decisions when forced to, but he's tried to avoid it. a pence presidency is going to delve directly into christofascism, and without so much as a hiccup. bathroom laws for all.

and, that is going to cave the gains they were making outside of the core red states, and put them back into the position they were in in 2012, where they were commanding an increasingly shrinking demographic of heartland conservatives being chipped away at from every direction. meanwhile, people like myself are just going to end up supporting third parties, when they might prefer a liberal republican over a conservative democrat - and don't want to concede the next 50 elections before they start. i mean, i want a fucking choice, i don't want to be constantly voting against looney-tunes idiots like mike pence.

again: i know that the democrats are the traditional conservative party in the united states, and i don't exactly want to stop them from regaining themselves. but, what's the right way to peel the republicans away from their evangelical base - which is dying, and which is going to happen over time, regardless? i mean, there's not going to be an evangelical base in a few more years, and the party will have no option but to move past it. where's it going? how do you direct them, in the best way possible, away from something that is clearly a losing strategy?

well, who've they got, then?

i don't know.

but, they'd be wise to avoid mike pence. he might feel familiar, but he'll lose - and the evangelicals will lose the next primary, too. their time is passed, and the party needs to look beyond them.
