i have to do this every once in a while because people forget or get confused or whatever.

my mother is supposedly of irish-norse-scottish background, and yet was raised in an anglican household. but, the person who her mother claimed was her father almost certainly isn't, an obvious observational fact that led to much violence in my mother's life, as he was able to figure that out when my mother was still very young. my mother is quite visibly clearly of plains indian extraction on her biological father's side, and indisputably of norse/irish background on her mother's side. my grandmother was married at 15 and had two children by the time she was 17 - a normal fact of life on the canadian prairies, at the time. she has refused elaboration on the point, and what consent would have meant to a girl her age at that place and time is hard to fathom, equally regarding the person she was married to and the person that impregnated her.

my mother was not raised religious and is best described as a levayan satanist in terms of belief systems, even if she would reject that in favour of vague expressions of deism or spirituality. she has (repeatedly) been through 12-step programs with both alcohol and heroin, and that would be the closest thing to organized religion over the course of her life.

both of my father's parents were roman catholics. his mother was an adopted italian woman, whose parents appear to have died in a mob hit. my oldest aunt was able to find a newspaper clipping of them being hit by a train after being tied to railroad tracks. my paternal grandmother had no relationship with her birth parents, but she was a practicing catholic. his father was a relatively dark-skinned and apparently extremely evasive man who died in his 50s of a heart attack; he smoked too much, drank too much and gambled too much on his way to having seven (known) children. but, he went to church every week, apparently. i have almost no recollection of him. my family does not know his ancestry, and it's not clear that he knew his own ancestry in much detail, either. however, it's generally understood that he was some mix of jewish, quebecois, native american and potentially subsaharan african. he inherited his catholicism from his very white quebecois mother. my father had a rare, austronesian blood type that only exists in south asia or madagascar, and a malagasy ancestry has been hypothesized for that reason. but, he looked not dissimilar to noam chomsky. actually. whatever the background was, the jewish was the most visible phenotypic expression of it.

my father's religion was hockey; he may have been vaguely deist, but he cared little for religion and did not attend services. when my stepmother found religion later in life, he did not find it with her and expressed a lot of disdain about it to me.

i was not raised in a faith. my mother did not want me to be baptized, but i was eventually baptized at the age of four in order to attend junior kindegarten. at the time, the catholic school system started at age 4 and the public school system started at age 5. i had been attending pre-school from the age of 2. so, in order to not skip a year, i was baptized and sent to a catholic school.

while i never developed any sort of catholic faith, and was broadly seen as a jew by the other students, i never had a good reason to switch to public school and stayed in the catholic school system until graduation - which i technically didn't do, because i refused to participate in the community service requirements under the argument that it was unpaid labour.

so, i'm of mixed ancestry, have been an atheist since birth, was baptized (but not confirmed) and have been generally seen as jewish.

trying to enforce it might be difficult.

it should come with some kind of mandatory severance, to really disincentivize firings. 



it took a few days, but it seems like round two of the migraine is coming in tonight, which means i may not get much done.
progressives are predictably at his neck, already, and it's pretty transparent - it's reflective of the overwhelming levels of anti-gay prejudice in the progressive movement, which is something that appears to be getting worse on a year-by-year basis. they're just blinded by hate. i wouldn't expect them to stop any time soon, and all i can say is that it exposes them for who and what they are and always have been.

but, his climate plan was one of the better ones, and he has the kind of capitalist mentality that is...

listen, we're running out of time on this. while long-term, sustainable changes are going to require a worker's movement, there's none in sight. so, we're forced to rely on capital, if we want this done....and there is, in truth, a lot of money to be made doing it. that's fine - he has the contacts required to grease the wheels, and that's what we need to get this moving, not empty progressive moralizing about his sexuality or his business background.

i mean, if the rich people want to get out of the city, that's fine - i'd love to move in. that's the kind of social stratification i grew up with - the wealth in the suburbs, and the poor downtown. i'm a city person to the core of my being. i don't know how to live in a suburb or small town and don't want to learn how. what i want is cheap rent downtown with a grocery store across the street and a bar with bands playing every night a few blocks away, for $5 cover. and, i want everybody for blocks around to be struggling artists, and no kids for miles.

i want wealthy people to be afraid to come into the neighbourhood, so that costs remain low for miles around.

i guess what i want is to undo gentrification. and, if the virus can do that, great!

but, i know that the virus won't undo the forces behind gentrification, which are so intrinsically connected with financialization. and, i know that all of the white flight in the world won't help to decrease rents if the government just lets a bunch of investors from hong kong come in and buy up cheap property to sell to wealthy immigrants from the middle east, instead.

so, i need to make a move, and i want to keep an eye on this, but i'm kind of skeptical. the fundamental problem is that we're bringing people into the country substantively faster than we're generating new housing, and it's driving inflation and enslaving all of us in the process - when they get you at the supply point of housing like this, we're left with no choice but to sell our labour to the banks if we want to exist.
the trend seems to be that the wealth is migrating out of the core of the gta and towards the suburbs, and while the reason for this may be the virus, it's mimicking the kind of white flight we saw in cities like detroit 30-40 years ago, and potentially creating the same sorts of situations.

i'd rather live in toronto than windsor. if i could afford it. i don't want to go back to ottawa....i was happy to get out....

if the rents keep falling, and the capital keeps fleeing, maybe it might open up some space. but, the flip side is that it could just create a vicious housing crisis, if foreign capital comes in and buys it all up.

the way i've come to grapple with godel is to come to terms with what we call "mathematics" itself being a model to understand this thing out there that should be called mathematics in greater generality. the maddening thing is that godel died as ever a platonist as he ever was to start, but i think that's what he must have really dismantled. and, i think the only thing that you can really do in response is to begin to embrace mathematics as a science, in contrast to this whole kantian thing that goes back to euclid, and is so embedded in even the way we teach basic geometry to children, still. now, he's right - that doesn't tell us anything about how the world is but it does present a different framework to try to understand it through.

did i speak too soon on sulfur?

what about broccoli? garlic? doesn't sulfur play a special role, here?

i keep saying it - broccoli is overrated. and, it is. and, this is at the crux of it: while these sulfur compounds in broccoli are great in vitro, the fact is that you just can't uptake them. the bioavailability is so low as to make the whole thing pointless. so, i took glutathione out and suggested getting the proper amino acid profile, instead.

there is in fact an entire class of sulfur-containing compounds called glucosinolates that are one of the reasons broccoli used to be so highly regarded, and mostly can barely be absorbed at all. while your body does use some of these compounds, it has to reconstruct them inside your body from various building blocks, including sulfur-containing amino acids. you can't absorb them in tact.

garlic is somewhat more promising, but you have to eat a lot of it, and you have to eat it freshly chopped and raw - meaning you have to eat it by yourself.

i may add an entry for allicin in the end, but i haven't committed. for the most part, the guidelines seem to be pretty clear - just follow the requirements for the amino acids.
on second thought, sulfur doesn't seem to have any dietary sources besides amino acids, which i'll deal with on it's own. the literature explicitly states that no ear is set for the precise reason that the data for amino acids should be used, instead:

Sulfate requirements are met when intakes include recommended levels of sulfur amino acids. Therefore, neither an Estimated Average Requirement (EAR), and thus a Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), nor an Adequate Intake (AI) has been established for sulfate. Overall, there were insufficient data to set a Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) for sulfate.

About 19 percent of total sulfate intake comes from inorganic sulfate in foods and another 17 percent comes from inorganic sulfate in drinking water and beverages. Foods found to be high in sulfate include dried fruits, certain commercial breads, soya flour, and sausages. Beverages found to be high in sulfate include select juices, beers, wines, and ciders. Sulfate is also present in many other sulfur-containing compounds in foods, providing the remaining approximately 64 percent of total sulfate available for bodily needs.

Sulfate deficiency is not found in people who consume normal protein intakes containing adequate sulfur amino acids. Adverse effects have been noted in individuals whose drinking water source contains high levels of inorganic sulfate. Osmotic diarrhea that results from unabsorbed sulfate has been described and may be of particular concern in infants who consume fluids derived from water sources with high levels of sulfate.

further, sulfates do not seem to need to be restricted life nitrates do.

so, while sulfur is certainly essential, it is not in the elemental form, and i will remove it from the chart.

chlorine is next.

i've gone to town with a few things - i'm not making up vitamins but rather filling things in. i mean, there's all these "missing vitamin names". what were they, exactly? it also gives me an excuse to work in a few things like choline that are hard to otherwise define as they are essential in some amount but not technically vitamins.
