- in 2014, they briefly banned marmite (uk) due to high fortification
- in 2025, they banned vegemite (aus), and the prime minister had to step in
- now they're banning nutritional yeast (us)
the claims that this is about protecting public health are utterly specious. the reason this is a good product is that it's low protein and low dose. the alternatives are unhealthy high protein beef or higher dosage vitamins. the amount of b vitamins in the yeast are less than in b-complex vitamins or in other fortified products like soy milk. further, these are water soluble vitamins with little chance of creating adverse effects.
there is no rational basis to the law.
rather, there is an ecclesiastical feel to the law, as certain religious groups don't allow the consumption of yeast. further, banning b vitamins from yeast would benefit the beef industry.
the issue would appear to require a more general change in the law.
but, i would also advise civil disobedience. do not obey this law. it has no basis in science.
