i know that capitalists are bad at planning. everything is short term, immediate profit.

however, a "data centre" is a long term investment. the companies need to ask themselves a serious question: how long do they expect these things to be in operation for?

five years? 10 years? 50 years?

their natural gas, coal (god forbid) or oil powered data centre won't last 10 years. the market won't let it. it's a poor investment decision that will lead to a catastrophic loss in the medium term and might even put  few companies out of business, as consumer demand hones in on this concern, and market preferences over power.

these ai firms aren't competing over a lot. their products are basically the same. costs are not substantively different. something they can be cave men about and compete over is energy sources.

as a consumer, a good ad from an ai company that sources from 100% renewable energy would certainly win me over, to the extent i would use this shit (which is not much to not at all).

you make your own bed, and at the end of the day you have to sleep in it. some of these firms are going to make bad decisions, power their ai centres with oil or gas and wake up dead.

ai "data centres", which are giant mainframe computers built in parallel with hundreds or thousands of processors, are brand new infrastructure. they are not tied to existing power grids, and are not old technology that needs to be upgraded. as such, it is very disappointing that some technology companies want to use 20th century electricity generation technology, like natural gas, to power their data centres. that is unacceptable as an infrastructure decision in the 21st century. these companies should not need a government to force them to use modern electricity generating technology, they should volunteer to do that on their own. consumers should be aware of companies that insist on dragging their feet and holding on to old energy generation technologies and not purchase their products, but leave them behind in the 20th century with their 20th century technologies.

ai should be powered strictly and exclusively with renewable energy generation and there should be an explicit, purposeful decision to ensure that's the case, and it is not integrated into existing or aging power generation, or obsolete technologies like oil and gas .
