"or, you will lead your people astray" may be a more coherent statement, but it's not much of a threat by our supposedly illiterate warrior king. it sounds more like the feigned reasoned words of a demagogue acting as a wise man. but, this is a good example of how religions change to fit the needs of the ruling classes - when islam is a force of domination, it threatens the romans to convert, or else. but, when it wants to be the "religion of  peace", it merely suggests that the infidels are losing their way, and pleads with them to save their souls from condemnation. while later and contemporary historians may prefer the later reading, the history suggests the earlier one is probably more accurate, however incoherent - and however apocryphal, regardless.

the history of western civilization would be quite different, indeed, had islam become a confessional faith that spread through evangelism, rather than a system of law enforced from the top down by the ruling aristocracy, whatever muslims today would have you believe.
