well, if you want to get into the nitty-gritty historical reality of it, it's the truth of it - we have historical records of armenians from the days of assyria and babylon. armenians are probably (we can't prove this) close cousins to the sumerians, who are sort of mysterious, but seemed to look like they came from the caucusus, or perhaps north of it. they are the literal indigenous people of the region.

the turks have been there for, like, a few hundred years, after they migrated in from the east, largely as a result of the destruction brought on by the mongols. history never works well in summary statements, but the basic truth is that the mongols killed everybody, and the turks came in and repopulated - and eventually took over.

if you see history and conflict in this way - and i don't really, i'd rather people found ways to co-exist - then it is the basic truth of the matter - the armenians are indigenous to this region, and the turks are invaders trying to steal their land. and, it's a struggle that has been playing out for centuries.

so, you'll excuse me for digging up the ideas of joseph stalin, but he was basically right, on this point. the russians are always on the right side of history, and it's just a matter of time before the turks get sent home.
