as you can see, i wasn't very interested in the contemporary music of the time. i only picked up new records by bowie, gabriel, pearl jam & rem - all older acts. i was afraid of that rem disc; i actually liked up a lot, it's as good as the band's best, but reveal went in a sappy direction. i suspect wayne coyne loved it; it kind of mapped out the flaming lips' direction in the 00s. but, rem doesn't make sense to me without the tension. i no doubt picked up document when i realized i only had it on an ancient, dubbed cassette.

that was somewhat of an uncharacteristic period for me, though, in that i wasn't getting very much alone time, and i was spending lots of money on things i don't normally spend money on.

i was disappointed by the pearl jam disc, but definitely enjoyed the gabriel discs - especially long walk home. i must have picked up birdy at the same time. in addition to having grown up with both gabriel and gabriel-period genesis, i was a big fan of the passion soundtrack at the time.

that wasn't my first try at the cure, but it was the try that finally stuck. my dad actually had a copy of wish that his brother gave him; dad thought the cure were too weird for him, and i found them a tad bit opaque at that age. i remember listening to the tapes and and not being able to pull any shape out of them. my tastes had definitely built up in that direction by late 2002, so it made sense to try and again, and i was able to make sense of it then in ways i wasn't when i was younger. it was the '85 release i liked the best.

i believe that the floyd cd was a christmas present.

some of them were things i had picked up at friends' houses, notably the portishead and system of a down. the balance would have been random pawn shop pick ups...some lasted longer than others...
