i think the adds are a little more contemporary, with a little bit of catch-up added in. it's pretty clear that my primary interest at the time was in post-rock, with everything else mostly being bleeding from the 90s. the coil ep was a present. the girl i lived with at the time was a big bjork fan.
that said, i didn't retreat from rock music on purpose. i just got bored with it, largely because there wasn't much interesting really happening. i've always had wide tastes; an interest in other forms would have never meant i couldn't also listen to some rock bands, if they were interesting. but, there weren't any around that were interesting. the one that kind of broke through it for me was the white stripes...
i was not very interested in the garage rock revival of the time; it struck me as a reduction of rock music to a novelty genre, void of anything remotely original or artistically driven. broadly speaking, rock music (per se) has been boring since the strokes - that is the moment the genre became a parody of itself, driven solely by fashion and greed and not interested in itself, any longer. when commercially viable rock music has been interesting since, it's been almost by accident.
jack white was different due to the simple fact that he was talented, unlike virtually every rock star around him, and virtually every rock star since then. i know there are broader ethnic and cultural issues at play, but what killed rock for me was that it just got boring. he's maybe the last legitimate rock star, in that respect.
