it's not about uniting the country, it's about ensuring the rule of law doesn't come back. nobody - not republicans, not democrats - wants to uphold the rule of law. so, what would have happened if obama had gone after bush? well, trump would have gone after obama for his own crimes, which were nearly as substantial. then, we create what the ruling class would see as a cycle of violence that they'd want to avoid. so, there's a consensus - call it the washington consensus, even. the timeframes add up. - that they just don't do this. like, at all. there's a caveat here, though, and it has to do with whether trump already tore up that consensus, and whether biden wants to bring it back or not. if biden prosecutes trump, the actual reason for it will be as retaliation for trump's attacks on clinton, which were in truth totally unprecedented in modern years. everything about trump is complicated, right? yet, even if biden interprets the situation that way, it's far more likely that biden will want to re-establish the previous consensus, at least until the next republican plays them for chumps. so, he's in a bit of a prisoner's dilemma, and i expect he'll at least try to do what he considers to be an attempt at co-operation, that meaning the re-establishment of the lapse of the rule of law, however incoherently trump may have failed at applying it (and, let's not be silly and assign any kind of consistency of thought to donald trump). then, biden's prerogative becomes to abandon the rule of law that trump failed to restore. but, i think jello realizes that, and he knows he's spouting idyllic silliness. and, i guess that says something about trump: he even managed to generate silly idealism and a suspension of cynicism from jello fucking biafra. that's surreal.
