i would like to see the canadian dollar get closer to parity. i don't benefit from a lower cdn dollar; i have increased purchasing power in the united states when the dollar is more valuable, and lower purchasing value when it's higher. that means that x dollars buys less beer and less concert tickets when the dollar is lower and more beer and more tickets when the dollar is higher.

it's actually american capital that is the primary beneficiary of a lower dollar because they can hire workers in canada at lower costs. that creates jobs here, but it might displace others and the overall benefit to individual canadian citizens is less obvious.

individual canadians do not benefit from a low dollar at all. they would be better off with higher purchasing power in the united states, not with more american employers in canada.

that said, the canadian dollar is largely tied to oil. so, the dollar goes up when oil goes up and falls when oil comes down. the lower canadian dollar is mostly a result of lower oil prices. if trump wants the canadian dollar to go up, the way to do it is to create substantive longterm pressure on oil prices.

but trump doesn't want that, clearly. i actually would also like to see higher oil prices because it should reduce consumption (and increase revenue in canada) and would support policies that both hike the cost of oil and increase the value of the cdn dollar. that sounds good to me.

if trump wants to separate the price of oil from the value of the cdn dollar, so that the cdn dollar goes up without increasing the cost of oil, the way to do it is to increase other canadian exports, perhaps by buying more canadian goods. he's not doing that, either. he's trying to stop that. that will drive the dollar down further.

what we're hearing from trump is consequently something along the lines of that he wants a llama for christmas, and he wants a pony, and he wants an elephant, too - delusional expressions of desire from a spoiled brat loser that expose a level of economic ignorance that demonstrate him as his unfit for the office he occupies.

mr trump can talk out of both sides of his ass, but he can't create opposite outputs of the same function, or live on both sides of the curve. the doublethink has physical limits in objective reality.
