what's going to happen is that consumers will switch to using couriers to delver everything, and these mailboxes will end up overflowing with flyers, as nobody bothers to go check them. canada post will, as a result, post even worse losses than it's posting now.
as a receiver, i'm not going to check the mailbox at all. it will just fill up with junk mail until there's no space left to put more junk in it.
further, as a consumer, there is no possibility that i'm going to send mail via canada post, knowing it's going to end up in one of these communal boxes. i will use fed ex or sendle instead, to ensure the package is delivered directly.
if canada post wants to survive, it needs to be increasing home delivery, not eliminating it.
this will completely destroy them.
as a taxpayer and a citizen, i don't expect canada post to be profitable, but i do expect it to be functional. i would rather they abolish canada post altogether than move to community mailboxes, and expect that they will very shortly, if they do this.
nobody is going to send anything using this system, and taxpayers shouldn't be funding it. it's not an acceptable compromise to save money, it's sheer stupidity that makes the concept of a post office irrelevant and useless.
