my best guess is that the cops shut it off in an attempt to try to stop me from "altering evidence".
but, this is a living document, it's not intended to be static and it's not intended to be "evidence". i'm not interested in pissing matches about being right or wrong, either - that has nothing to do with why i'm backposting, and i don't care if end up being right or wrong in the long run. this is more about the enjoyment of speculating than it is about any kind of clairvoyance or superiority or any pretentious bullshit like that.
so, it's under constant revision and always will be. if you want to snapshot parts of it, that's your prerogative, but i'm not interested in their or your opinion on the matter - and i will continue to edit the posts the hard way, as the issue comes up, if i have to.
i mean, could you imagine trying to write a manuscript and having the editor tell you you can't edit it? it's ridiculous.
that said, the editing is mostly about fixing typological errors, correct mistyped words (i do that fairly often), fixing awkward sentences, etc. i have every right to edit my own writing as i see fit, and see nothing wrong with doing it.
but, i mean, i don't have a motive to just make things up...
regardless, let's say i did decide to just make things up and back post them. so what? i mean, i don't have a desire to do that, and i'm not, but what would the concern be if i did? again - it's a rooted in a misunderstanding of what a blog is. if i want to back date an entirely fictional narrative, there's no reason in the world that i couldn't, and i have no obligation to care whether anybody thinks that's dishonest or not.

i sat down a few week ago to quickly add a few things to the chart because i was feeling a little tired, but i'm feeling a lot better now, and i'm going to get back to cleaning tonight, and then shift into working on the alter-reality tomorrow. i'm not going to get any actual recording done over the weekend, but i may get the pc cleaned out. i'll get back to the diet on monday, and it will be me focus until for the week, until i catch up.
they're trying to cite s. 45, which is completely wrong.
Section 45 of the Constitution Act, 1982 allows each province to amend its own constitution. However, if the desired change would require an amendment to any documents that form part of the Constitution of Canada, it would require the consent of the federal government under section 43.
so, no - they can't insert a statement about quebec into the document, unilaterally. that's just wrong.
so, can quebec alter the constitution?
the premise is ridiculous (that's why we have a constitution), but you have to acknowledge a basic point - quebec never signed or ratified the constitution, and quebeckers really don't see it as their constitution.
previous courts...you know, i'm not even sure that the mclaughlin court would have even heard an argument that a province has a unilateral ability to modify the constitution. that's just utterly ridiculous. but, this guy they've got in there now is a loose cannon, and his rulings to this point have been atrocious. there's a good chance he might see the constitution as a liberal conspiracy to wipe out the right or something. and, he may be more likely to cite the nineteenth century version - which is essentially a relic of british colonialism, rather than an actual constitution.
so, the law says that there is a complicated legal process to open and amend the constitution and i would expect a functioning court system to uphold that, but i'm not sure the court system is currently functioning, so it gets blurry.
but, what quebec might do is ignore the constitution, as it has done before, and how it is that the rest of the country goes about enforcing rules on them is something we've largely avoided, to this point...
so, you'd imagine something like the following working itself out:
- quebec can certainly legislate rules for itself, as it sees fit. it can try to pass a rule that "alters the constitution" in quebec, but what it's actually legally doing is defying the constitution and challenging the legal system to stop it.
- it would then be up to some groups in quebec to launch a constitutional challenge. now, quebec may claim it is no longer subject to such a challenge, but that would be equivalent to a statement of sovereignty, and the courts couldn't take such a thing seriously.
- by definition, any attempt by quebec to alter the constitution would necessarily be unconstitutional, and necessarily be declared ultra vires - if the court is correctly functioning, which does not appear to be the case.
but, then what?
if the court declares the change unconstitutional, and quebec just ignores it...the next step is a civil war, which nobody wants. and, as mentioned, there are confusing questions about jurisdiction and democracy, given the linguistic and cultural differences. what right do we really have to enforce a constitution on a province that won't sign it, then demand they uphold the rules they won't agree to?
so, to put it another way....
if quebec were to try to unilaterally alter the constitution, it would instantly throw the country into a potentially existential constitutional crisis that could lead to a partition of the country because, no, it can't actually do that. and, it's not clear that this federal government would choose to fight that battle - it may just concede the point without a fight. but, it would still be illegal, and we'd just be left with a pariah province that refuses to follow the rules.
historically, the main tool at the disposal of the federal government would be to threaten to withhold transfer payments - including health care payments. but, that would instantly destroy the liberals in quebec for a generation.
the truth is that this is probably just cyber-rattling and empty electioneering by a provincial government that wants the tories back in power, but it's potentially an exceedingly messy situation, and the likelihood of violence is not trivial.
now, what would i do?
well, it depends. what is the change? and the answer is a triviality:
“Quebecers form a nation” and “French shall be the only official language of Quebec. It is also the common language of the Quebec nation.”
those statements are not currently in the constitution, but would anybody care if they were? i mean, who cares, ultimately? see, and that's where the calculation that this is battle not worth fighting (likely, given that the pmo is currently staffed by slackers and potheads) comes in....
....but it's wrong because it would entirely dissolve the authority of the state, and undo the premise of federalism. you'd get alberta inserting language about oil revenues, bc inserting language about the environment and ontario inserting language about doug ford's god given right to eat barbeque, no mattter what, ever, always. you get the point - if the rational analysis is that this is trivial, what's stopping anybody else from trivial amendments? and, then the constitution no longer exists - it's death by a thousand amendments.
what trudeau should say is this:
i am not a lawyer, i am a politician, and this is not a political debate, this is a matter for the courts.
in time, perhaps it won't be. but, the court needs to shape the bounds of debate, for better or worse, and the feds should completely step away from it until it does.
if the court rules that the legislation is ultra vires - as it no doubt will - then the next step is to offer quebec a choice - if they feel that strongly about the situation, let us have a constitutional convention and amend the document in the legal manner set out within it. if they do not, let them drop their concern.
and, once the process has played itself out, quebec always has the right to hold another referendum.
but, two points are important here as major take-aways:
1) big cock authoritarian tactics (like withholding funding) should be a last resort. there is a lengthy legal process, here. allow that to work itself out, first.
2) because the process is so lengthy, very few of the people involved in the process when it launches will still be around to see it complete, and the logic of the situation may very well change.
there is no reason to create a crisis around something that may very well burn itself out with the next election in quebec.
so, that's my advice to trudeau - defer to the courts.
listen - i'm not a vaccine skeptic. go get vaccinated. i won't tell you otherwise.
i'm more of a vaccine existentialist, at least for the next few months, in the sense that i don't think the effects of the vaccine can be effectively separated from the noise of the weather and encroaching natural herd immunity due to widespread transmission. at the least, we can not just jump to that conclusion - that is an empirical question, and it requires a statistical test. if i'm skeptical about anything, what i'm skeptical about is the efficacy of all these measures, when compared against the effects of randomness and chaos. and, that's the question that statisticians face and resolve on a day-to-day basis.
so, that's the right way to interpret me, here - what i'm suggesting is that, for most people, the vaccine doesn't actually matter, that it's largely just meaningless theatre.
the problem with trump is not that he was some kind of russian spy, which is a comical supposition.
the problem with trump is that he was essentially retarded, when it came to understanding military tactics, and he consistently understood american strategic objectives so poorly that he supported ideas that would actually benefit america's opponents.
america wants to protect german industry from russian influence, and it wants to do that by positioning large amounts of troops there, and by bribing the german people to take the side of the west over the russian side. and, it certainly wants to ensure that it is germany that benefits from russian energy wealth, rather than russia itself.
and, putin is a fool for failing to understand that - but this is longstanding, and his strategic blunders are quite numerous.
to be clear: while it does certainly seem to be the case that trump thought that restricting russian exports to germany is in american interests, that "logic" is really exactly what it appears it is: this is trumpism, and it can only be comprehended, however incoherently, through a trumpist filter.
trump's logic is something along the lines of that commerce should be restricted between germany and russia in order to maintain american influence over the region, and that germany should be punished for acting outside of american hegemony by seeking trade relations with outside actors. ok. but, you'd have to be an oligarch to think that actually makes sense.
if you're looking at the situation as a chess board, in a geostrategic manner, which trump was unable to do, your goal is not to prevent the russians from engaging in commercial activity with the actors around it, but rather to find ways to extract as much out of the country as is possible. it would follow that exporting resources from the former soviet union to the western satellites is in western interests because the west gets to use those resources rather than the russians. the russian self-interest here would actually be to hoard the resources - which is what the chinese are doing. it further follows that an american military presence is necessary in europe to protect those extracted resources, and ensure they are developed in the west, rather than in russia.
i've been over this more than a few times: i basically think that putin is a contemptible fool, with a very poor grasp of strategy, and this idea that he's some kind of strategic genius is essentially just western propaganda, designed to construct an enemy to justify military budgets.
so, if russia were acting in it's self-interest, it would act to prevent the export of these raw materials, and seek to develop the industry in russia, instead. but, it isn't. and, the properly rationalistic policy from the west is to take advantage of that by encouraging the russians to export as much as they can, for as cheap as they can, so that those resources belong to us, rather than them.
it follows that biden's policy of supporting german purchases of russian gas is a rational, pro-western policy, and the fake left media just exists in lalaland in suggesting otherwise - as always.

today's post moves directly into the rabit is wolf period, which took up my time over the first half of 2002. this final presentation is a compromise, but i'm happy with how it ended up, in the end.

this came out of a two-person psychedelic folk project i was working in over late 2001 and into mid 2002. we had brainstormed the idea of a piece that slowly built itself up, like a wave, and that had sporadic pieces of poetry interspersed as it did so. of the two of us, i was the musician, and he was the poet; i generally produced the music by myself. however, my vision of the track proved to be much larger than his, to the point that the two ideas could not be effectively reconciled given the deficit of technology available to us (i simply couldn't find a way to get enough resources to condense the track to under ten minutes). that left me with this seventy minute ambient piece that has mostly stayed hidden in my closet over the last twelve years.
in 2014, i strongly contemplated reconstructing the short version out of existing material, but it would have required a rethink of the process that i felt would be invasive to the poet involved. the reality is that the music that i created was not well suited as accompaniment for the poem, and it should just be left at that. in oct of 2017, i added the poem to the disc, a capella, as an introduction to the track.
this is very much process music. it's built on 36 distinct loops of identical length (just under 57 seconds) that assemble the collage up on a loop by loop basis, hitting it's full point only in the 35th loop. the 36th loop does not fit into any of the patterns that define the first 35, but is nonetheless the climax of the piece. this is followed by a disassembling process that is precisely the reverse of the assembling process. together, this produces the effect of a long wave of sound washing over the listener.
aesthetically, it's likely clear that i had been listening to a lot of "kosmische" style synthesizer music of european origin. it's actually a key part of my musical style, so a bigger exploration of it's themes is not at all out of place. however, i generally prefer to take ideas from the genre and recontextualize them rather than delve into a full exploration. this is somewhat unique in my discography as being an album-length analog synthesizer work.
either as ambient or kosmische or process music, this is mostly meant as background music.
written late 2001 and early 2002. this file is ripped from a cd-r that was burnt around 2002, as that was the option that would produce the most accurate reproduction of the original composition. published without modification on oct 6, 2014. expanded, re-released and finalized as symph006 and lp012 on oct 23, 2017. as always, please use headphones.

i've tried to switch from windows to linux on a number of occasions, but, in the end, the problem is always that i can't get linux support for my sound gear. it's been a few years since my last attempt, and i have been toying with putting linux on the 64-bit machine.
and, there was a time when macs were different - they had different processors, and different architectures. that was a debate, back then; now, it's historical.
a mac nowadays really is literally just an hp or dell with a different sticker on it, and that sticker costs roughly $3000/machine. that's not much of an exaggeration - if you put linux on your hp, you'd have a mac for half the price.
so, there's actually even something poetic about putting a fake mac sticker on a windows laptop, if you actually understand how these devices are manufactured and are able to see past the surface branding optics.
....which nobody would reasonably expect that mr trudeau would have the depth of thought required to do.

ok, so i fixed a few things, and this is my new template.
i need to get some cheese info in there. but, now i'm at the point of pondering what and how i should supplement further, and the first vitamin in the list is vitamin a.
i know that vitamin a comes in two forms, and i know that conversion is often poor. i think i was previously overestimating the amount i was getting from a combination of tomatoes/soy/cheese/eggs, and i was told that vitamin a deficiency can't happen here and believed it, but after actually calculating the values, which i should have done years ago, i think i need to pay special attention to this.
this is worth sorting through to summarize the situation:
so, i'm getting about 54% of my vitamin a from actual retinol (soy, ice cream, eggs, margarine), not including cheese. the other 110% is from carotenoids found in fruit (you'll notice there's not yet any vegetables in my diet, and i need to change that). is that a good enough mix? well, for a, i'd like to shoot for 400% total, with 100% in the retinol and 300% in the carotenoids. that should eliminate any potential error, and make sure i'm converting as much as possible. a single carrot is an extra 250%, entirely via carotenoids, and with minimal k, so i think that solves that without even wading into the problems presented by broccoli. but, what about actual retinol?
given that i'm trying to avoid fish due to the mercury content, my only serious choice for vitamin a is via fortification or via dairy products, and i only really get dairy in the form of ice cream (which i think i'm maxed out on) and cheese (which is what i'm looking at next). i don't want to eat animal organs, 'cause gross.
so, next time somebody gives you shit about eating cheese, you might want to point to the retinol. unless they're eating a fair amount of liver or fish, or paying very close attention to how the grains they eat are fortified, or drink a lot of fortified whole milk, or eat eggs every day, or eat lots of fattening peanut butter, cheese is really the only serious way to get any. and, i'll pick cheese over the others...
how many of the options in this list sound appetizing to you?
on that note, the other thing i can do is buy a box of cereal and throw it in with the fruit. something like a cup of plain jane special k or corn flakes is not bad on fat, and will help with b complexes, too. it's cheap, as well. i just need to find the brand that has what i want, which is - lots of vitamins, minimal sugar, minimal salt & minimal price. and, i'll bring it home on the unicorn i parked in the lot.
so, that means i should be looking at cheddar-type cheeses, as they have more retinol than mozza type cheeses. i'm not sure there's any reason to migrate from the marble, but i'll see if i can get a better answer on that, too.
...which was actually pretty easy, i just went to the site:
my marble has 10%/30g, which is about on par with the cheddar numbers at the self site (maybe a little higher). the black diamond mozza is at 8%, which is consistent. but, if i'm eating cheese for a, i can actually max that out by moving to one of the flavours with 15%, which are:
- mild cheddar [180 mg of salt]
- medium [old or white] [180 mg of salt]
for reference, the marble has 200 mg of salt and is marketed as medium. that seems like what i should do...
so, i'm not adding anything in this post besides the top line of vitamin a, i'm just reposting the template. but, to get me to where i want to be with a, my options are:
- carrots (250% more carotenoids presents resolution for >300% carotenoids dv)
- cheese (~45% more retinol) (99%)

i'm starting with vitamin a, on the top line and moving down, and i'm instantly finding an error in the data that could very well be catastrophic. the raw numbers at the self site seem to be pulled directly from the usda, but the conversion factors seem to be all wrong.
consider bananas.
there are supposed to be 30.7 μg of beta-carotene and 55.5 μg of alpha-carotene equivalents in 118 g of banana. the factor for beta-carotene is supposed to be 12 & the factor for alpha-carotene is supposed to be 24. this would suggest that there is a total of:
30.7/12 + 55.5/24 = 4.87 μg of retinol activity equivalents. yet, the site insists on 3.5 μg rae, and i can't immediately see what the conversion factor is.
worse, when you convert from 3.5 μg rae to ui, the factor should by 10/3. so you should get (7/2)*(10/3) = 35/3 = 11.67. yet, the site insists on 75.5 ui - which is indeed about 2% of 3000 ui, a bit more. but, converting backwards, you'd need to get to 22.65 μg rae, which seems a far cry from 4.87 or 3.5.
so, the numbers being thrown around don't appear to be consistent with each other, and if you go directly to the usda site, you might get the explanation i'm trying to find - they come from independent estimates. so, the ui is not calculated from the component sections.

the numbers for the carotenoids appear to be an average calculated independently from the rae or iu numbers.
now, if i plug in the highest numbers in the sample, for fun, i get:
2*(68.4/12 + (88.5+31.9)/24) = 21.43 μg rae, which is at least close, but demonstrates a point i've been trying to get at by lowballing everything - these numbers are not static, and are going to depend on things like growing conditions and storage. when foods are fortified, their contents are determined in a lab and it's more clear; when they're plucked out of a produce section, you often just don't really know. you have to guess...
that's why i'm coming in low and aiming high on everything.
that said, i'm also assuming the ui numbers are for total retinol equivalents due to the calculated daily value numbers. it happens to be, though, that 3.54/0.05 ~ 70, meaning the conversion factor is much closer when it's calculated directly from beta-carotene. if that is what they did, and i think it is, then they made an error in the final conversion, as they should have calculated the rdi at 18,000 rather than 3,000 and that is only 0.5%. that would appear to be an error in conversion at the self site, rather than by the usda; the usda provides the numbers 3.54 μg rae and 75.5 ui, but does not derive one from the other, specify units for ui (retinol, or beta-carotene) or provide a daily value from them. yet, it is clear from the numbers that the usda must have meant ui beta-carotene, and the self site misread it as ui retinol. and, i wonder if that factor of 6 carries through (in fact, it does).
so, how do i fix that?
while i would like to add up the components as modularly as possible, i don't know how complete the listing is. there are more than six carotenoids, so i may miss total retinol by adding them up. further, i now *know* that i'm not going to get the same answers.
what i'm going to do is rely on the rae number. this should consistently be a very rough factor of six lower than what i had listed, due to a conversion error at the self site. i apologize for not catching that, but i just took the data as i saw it.
if you are an editor at the self site, please make that correction - you are not converting properly and are inflating carotenoids by a factor of 6.
so,
- bananas go from 4% to 7.08 μg (which is roughly a factor lower at .78%)
- strawberries are entered in at .75 μg, which is still 0%
- avocados go from 4% to 10.5 μg, which is that same factor downwards
- kiwis are at 3 μg, still very low
- the soy, ice cream & cereal present their dv% on the box as retinol (not carotenoids) and will be left as is.
so, the sum for this meal is now:
38% dv for retinol
21.33 μg rae carotenoid, which is 2.37% of the dv.

40.37%, down from 47%.
i will correct these items in the chart.
now, this might seem terrible, but let's take a step back.
when i initially crunched these numbers, i decided i would need:
1) 100% retinol, split by threes because it's fat soluble.
2) 300% convertible, because i'm going to lose a factor of 3, roughly, if i have conversion issues.
the correction i'm making is a more aggressive one, but it is essentially working out the same concern, just putting it into the chart. and, as such, there's not any real reason to seek out 300% of the daily value of carotenoids if i'm calculating the rae up front.
let's see what the numbers for the rest of the meal look like:
peppers - first, note that i'm boosting the amount to 200 g because that's more realistic. the giant peppers i bought the other day are more in the 250-275 g range, but that's before they're cut. even so, i never really see the small ones, and am going to hold out for the biggest ones at the best price when i find them. so, that's 314 μg, and a much smaller 35% - but note that that is roughly a third of the 103% i was overshooting for.
pasta - the 1% was pulled from data in this paper, which eyeballed .5 μg. i should divide that by a factor of 24, which is .02 μg rae.
cheese - is from a modern label, and is 30% pre-formed retinol
carrots - i am likewise boosting carrots to 110 g as that is more reflective of reality. that number is chosen to get the carotenoid rae content over 100%, which is what i actually wanted. that's 918 μg.
so, i still have 30% pre-formed from the cheese and now have:
314+918+.02 = 1232.02 μg rae, which is 137% from carotenoids.
together, that's 167%, in more precisely measurable terms. and, note that 345/3 = 115 < 137, so i'm arguably doing better via that calculation, conceptually.
the eggs are the first and maybe only hybrid decision for vitamin a in the matrix. the numbers at the self site are interesting:
- 335 iu (7%)
- 88.8 μg of actual retinol
- 91.1 μg of total rae
that would indicate 2.3 μg of rae from carotenoids, and they do indeed appear to be measurable in the data.
as before, the iu does not appear to be calculated from the rae numbers but comes from an independent analysis that is close but off due to error. the carotenoid numbers would indeed appear to be roughly 2.5, so i'm going to be consistent and stick with the rae in order to minimize any further conversion errors at the self site. and, in this case, that number actually increases my total...
as before, the weight factor is three, so:
88.8*3 = 266.4 μg [29.6%]
2.3*3 = 6.9 μg &
91.1*3 = 273.3 μg, which is 30.37% total, up from 21%.
the cheese & margarine are from modern labels and come in at 15% and 10%, respectively.
so,
retinol: 54.6%--->54%
carotenoid: .77%--->1%
===========

the soy in the coffee is from a modern label and will not be altered.
the new totals are:
126% retinol +
140% retinol equivalent carotenoids

further, 140*3 = 420 > 354, so the recalculation actually suggests i was lowballing, as intended.
i'm going to apologize again, but it's not like this is really my fault - i didn't make a mistake in the calculation, so much as the site i was using made an error in their conversion factor, and i only caught it because the numbers didn't add up. i actually corrected somebody else's error, here. that's called peer review and this is why science needs it. that said, i had already compensated for this, conceptually, so it turned out to be a move sideways and not much of a big deal, after all.
note the altered requirements for a at the bottom.
we'll jump to b1 next, and make sure the numbers are right - relatively to the new weightings of the pasta bowl.

hey, listen - i think that eventual contact with extra-terrestrial life is quite likely, and i consider aliens to be a naturalistic explanation, rather than a supernatural one. that's my position, and we can debate that if you like, but you know i get irked by the strawmen, and the smugness when attached to positions that are actually not that bright.
and, i actually think most physicists would have a general agreement with these statements, rather than a disagreement.

no, listen. it's important that we get this right - because the world has a history of getting this wrong, and what happens when the world gets this wrong tends to be rather terrible, if continually repeatable. specifically, let's make sure we understand who the bad guys are here, let's make sure that we're not scapegoating, let's make sure that we get it - and not repeat the mistakes of those that didn't.
israel is roughly the size of new jersey and has population demographics roughly the size of it as well, meaning it would be the sixth smallest state in the union, if it were a part of the union, which it functionally is. and, i believe that that calculation includes the west bank. while it has a capable military and relative technological superiority that gives it substantive power in the region, it is nonetheless a relatively small country (slightly larger than slovakia, and slightly smaller than el salvador.) with relatively limited influence outside of it's immediate scope. it has no allies in the region, and few allies out of it.
the united states remains the global hegemon, with unrivalled global military dominance, including unmatched air supremacy. it remains at the top of the hierarchy of all of the global dominant military, economic, financial, intelligence-sharing and cultural institutions, as it designed the world to exist after the second world war - institutions that, as it happens to be, do not include israel as a member state, but rather as a distant second-rate also-ally.
these are merely the facts: the united states runs the world, and israel isn't even invited.
so, what exactly does it mean to suggest that the united states needs to stand up to israel? what do those words mean? it's a conspiracy theory, and it exists outside of any remote concept of reality.
and, so this is what we have in front of us with this conflict - neither side exists in reality, bases it's arguments around reality or references reality when it analyzes the situation, or presents solutions to it. that is where we are with this, and it's exceedingly dangerous.
bernie is closer to reality when he points to the massive american military subsidies that israel requires to exist, but he states it without the necessary context, namely the importance of the hegemonic power having a dominant military presence in the oil-producing regions, and the importance of keeping the groups indigenous to the region in constant conflict with each other, to prevent them from utilizing that wealth to challenge the hegemonic power's hegemony.
but, if you really want to actually understand this, you need to read bernie's source, which is chomsky. chomsky will tell you the truth, which is that israel will not act outside of the hegemon's control - and that it constantly, always, seeks approval before it strikes. something like what we're seeing in gaza today could not and cannot happen without biden signing off on it, first.
there's a naive reading to this, which is that this person is just a kid and she doesn't understand what she's saying, and i'm still leaning in that direction, which should be obvious. but, such an analysis has an expiry date, and there are plenty of signals that it should be retired, in this case for a much more sinister reading: which is that she's being sent out to blur the narrative, in a very historically predictable way.
i don't quote the ayatollah often, but remember - israel is merely the little satan. the great satan is the president of the united states.
and, we need to understand the balance of power as a first step if we want to do anything about this - and stop pretending that america gets it's orders from israel. it's absurd.
the irony is that the only real solution is carbon transition, and this won't end until we get off oil - if the palestinians don't merely get wiped out, first.
so, i just pasted my first chart into the document and it immediately became apparent that i can't convert this to 5x8. i flipped it over from 8.5x11 to 11x8.5 and that didn't make sense, either. the width of 8.5 should be fine, in the end, but i may have to extend the length. i'm not going to, yet.

ok, so i got up to the end of august done, which means i'm just about at the linkage point and it's time to stop to eat....yesterday's breakfast. yeah.
i knew when i designed this meal that i wouldn't eat every day, but at least i'm eating a lot better. and, if i'm back to longer days, maybe it'll matter a lot less.
...and inri052 is my fifth record, finally sequenced as it is here for the first time in 2014, from material written over 2000-2001.
everything on the record was previously posted within inri043-inri048 & inri050, with 'stress' initially appearing on inri038 (as an alternate version of that recording), in addition to inri048 (which is why it was recorded, in this form). so, in hindsight, thanks to jon for convincing me to make that recording, even if it wasn't how he intended it to be. but, these versions are the most final, complete versions from each of those recordings, sequenced together into a traditional rock-era "lp" that comes in around 80 minutes, the length of a cd - or two vinyls.
i mention that because the thing splits at about 40 minutes, roughly. the first forty minutes are mostly abstract jazz, and songs that cam be cleanly separated into each other; the last forty minutes is dominated by scored sequencer parts, and runs into itself as a giant piece of twisted electronic music.
there are some aleph discs to follow, and then we shift into 2002, which was dominated by rabit is wolf, and eventually culminates in the sequel to this record, at the end of the year.

this is a full record of material documenting tracks written in 2001 that were in a more "serious" style and completed from 2001-2014.
the intent with the core of the material (1,3,6,7,8) was for it to be performed by live musicians one day. in early 2014, i came to the conclusion that this was not going to ever happen and was pleasantly surprised to learn that the technology had improved enough for a realistic presentation of the material using sequencers. these versions of (1,3,6) also include live guitars.
tracks 2 and 5 were salvaged from an aborted project meant to reinterpret classical guitar music as modern noise. the project was permanently aborted due to the loss of the sheet music that was necessary to finish it.
track 4 is an electric folk tune with heavy counterpoint that i was playing live as a party trick at the time.

i actually don't have much criticism around the idea of israel taking out senior members of hamas, even if i'll agree that it's likely futile. if the israelis were to change their tactics from indiscriminate saturation bombings to targeted killings of terrorists, i wouldn't have a lot left to say about it.
but, i mean, everybody that is aware of what's happening on the ground knows that what they're doing is a genocide in slow motion, and that that kind of projection is delusional in character.
i'd be happy to see them prove me wrong, though.
again: i oppose lockdown measures. but, i'm not sure the anti-lockdown groups are really the kind of temporary allies i'm looking for. and, i don't know what the point of protesting in the park is.
it reflects this kind of enslaved attitude, as these people seem to require some kind of validation or something. no, really - that's what it has to be about.
if you don't want to wear a mask, don't wear one. i don't. the rules are far less strict than you think, and they only exist because people are passively allowing for it. if you really want to oppose the mask laws, then just go about your life without one.
likewise, if you want to throw a party, then throw one - although i'd advise taking specific precautions to avoid getting raided.
this isn't a collective issue, where we need to get together to pressure our governments to act, it's a question of individual choice. and, the way to undo the tyranny is not through a protest movement, but by just discarding the authority of the state as overreaching it's constitutional bounds.
so, it brings up questions about what their motives really are, and whether or not what you're seeing is really what are fairly shady groups with pretty bad politics essentially trying to take advantage of the scenario. we're living in a dark point of history, where the left has essentially abandoned science under the force of immense statist brainwashing, so what i would like to see - the left taking advantage of the crisis to build solidarity - has essentially been co-opted by the right, who at least seem to see the potential value of the moment. so, in a sense, i have to applaud the right for actually doing what the left should be doing, and this is just the latest example in a kind of trend of that occurring. but, it doesn't make these groups any more appealing.
i know this is a lonely time, but it's better to stay away from these kinds of groups than think you can co-opt them. they're more likely to get to you than you are to get to them.
so, that's my advice - protesting is the wrong tactic, here, because this isn't about the collective will, it's about personal choice; it's a social issue, it's not a political issue. and, you don't need anybody's approval or validation, in life. just go out and do what you want.
hey, we spent some time a little earlier setting up my maxxed out windows 98 pc, on a psb-f from 1998 that i got for christmas in 1999. i've had to swap out everything except the board, power supply and case, but it still runs.
i have a 64-bit pc in a box that i haven't built yet and really need to soon....
...but, i fully expect that this 32-bit machine will last another 10 years, at least.
so, i'm pretty sure about the known good gb of ram in the suspected bad slot - that's been stable.
i'm going to try a second gb of suspected good ram in parallel, to close off the first two slots.
this board can take 8 gb of ram, but it's running a 32-bit os (and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future), so i put 4x1 gb sticks of gold-plated ocz in there, but i built it in 2007, so it's getting a little bit old.
i've had to rescue it several times, and i've put a bd-r in it and swapped a few things around, but i've only ever had to replace one of the four hard drives in the machine over the last fourteen years. that's it. so, let's hope the ram is fine, after all.
i tend to like the stuff that's less pompous, and more focused on songwriting, in whatever abstraction - or more psychedelic. so, i like genesis, crimson, floyd - although i actually prefer oldfield, or tangerine dream, to the bulk of it.
i tend not to like the geekier or more randian stuff, like rush or elp or zeppelin.
and, when you bring the macho poseurism or show-offism that is more indicative of metal than prog in, i just tune out altogether. so, i just can't get into stuff like dream theatre or slayer for that reason, although the major problem with later dream theatre is less that it's too metal and more that the singer just ruins it. there's a short time window of dream theatre stuff that i've found instrumental japanese imports of, that i can actually get into.
so, i made fun of him for listening to hair metal, too. i didn't just take that shit.
i think i got him a little into tortoise, which is the kind of thing he ought to have liked, although he seemed to prefer mcentire's work with the sea and cake, and i know he enjoyed tool when given the opportunity to, as well.
but, i never saw him play. not even once. rather, it was myself that ended up playing these kits that were always sitting around...
where did i learn about sound recording?
...and he would constantly reference it in making fun of me for recording by myself, something that shows up here and there, tongue-in-cheek, if you look for it.
i have taken a handful of courses both in high school and at carleton, but i don't think it helped much, and both were after i'd been recording for years. the actual truth is that my dad was a useful resource, here.
i actually wish he'd have written some kind of biography, so i could order his own life a little better; i wasn't born yet when he was in his early 20s, and he seemed to view that period of his life as something to take a bit of a step away from. but, what i was able to piece together is that he spent some time in the late 70s as a drummer and sound engineer, mostly dealing with local metal bands in and around ottawa.
now, he was a prog guy - his drum heroes were like terry bozio, bill bruford, phil collins, neil peart, that kind of thing. he was a big mike portnoy fan later in life. and, he had this kind of zappaesque disdain for punk rock as overly simplistic, although i think i was able to help him understand a little later on that the point of punk was political rather than musical. it was actually on his suggestion that i check out the dead kennedys, after i brought home a new offspring record, at the age of 13 - although he then made fun of me for listening to it.
i think this fundamentally warped his concept of punk rock for life:
but, he wasn't exactly an expert or a working musician, either - he often insisted on owning a drum kit, but i never saw him actually play it, so i can't offer any kind of informed opinion about what he could actually do on it. i saw him noodle around on a bass a few times, and it was clear to me (as a seasoned guitarist, even at age 15) that he had no idea what he was doing. but, he fancied himself a drummer in his mind, anyways - and those were the musicians he followed, drummers in prog bands.
but, it was enough to get me started, and that's really the most important thing, right? my concepts about microphones, about room acoustics, about equalization, about recording gear and even about guitar effects are rooted primarily in questions i asked in my mid to early teens, and while i know today that he was actually even flat out wrong about a number of things, that starting point was really invaluable.
......but, only up to a point.
i'm not a digital native, but i'm the very last gen xer and i had a computer with (dial-up) internet access in my bedroom before i turned 17. so, i'm not a digital native, i had a learning curve, but i'm just about at the end of the cusp of it - there are no doubt even people my age that would consider themselves digital natives. so, i was able to take these basic things i learned from my dad, and this glossary of language i understood, and just yahoo search it. this was before google, actually.
i toyed with going to school to be a sound engineer, and in hindsight i sort of wish i did, but my dad's apprehension about that period in his own life meant he wasn't going to pay for it, and the student loan system in ontario wouldn't cover it. these were expensive programs, too - $10,000/yr on base tuition, compared to around $1,500/yr at the local university (this was still the late 90s). so, i ended up stumbling through a math degree, instead, just due to the realities around me...
i don't think i'd have ended up working in a studio, though. i fundamentally can't deal with other people, and it sort of doesn't matter what my education is or might have been - i would have run up against this same brick wall of social awkwardness, regardless. it took me a long time to kind of figure that out. i would have enjoyed it a lot more, though, and i would have no doubt walked down a very different path and had a very different journey, even if i ended up in the same place, in the end. and, we're all dead, in the long run.
but, as a path, that's not something that was available to me, due to finances and the sort of societal perspective that it's not a vocation of much actual value. i was born poor and raised poor and found myself middle class due to marriages in my middle to late teens; regardless of where i started, the government will send poor kids to school to be doctors or lawyers or professors, but they won't send them to school to be sound engineers. you need substantive capital to invest up front if you really want to do that, and it just wasn't available to me.
so, i often sound like i have a fancy sound design degree, but i actually don't - what i actually have is a math degree, although i studied physics for a while, i took a handful of sound design courses and i went deep into the computer science and law programs, too. it's more that i grew up around gear, and learned about it by actually using it, and by asking functional questions, as a child does, to my dad, who owned the bulk of it.
inri051 starts yet another new project, the political noise project fuel true anarchy in the americas (stylized as the ftaa). this is just a minor tease of a few short experiments i was toying with over the fall of 2001, as reaction to the event that occurred at the time. while the concept only develops about 70% of the way, a record is constructed in 2004 out of odds and ends pulled from other projects. a second record is constructed in 2017 called spoke that finishes the thought properly.

i don't have an exact date for these files, so i'm picking november 11th. as others were, i was concerned about the president abolishing the magna carta after 9/11 and congress doing little more than helping him do it. however, this was meant to be a more encompassing project that combined harsh noise with political sampling that was pushing an anarchist agenda. the name of the project (ftaa) was chosen as a pun - it could either be the free trade agreement of the americas or about fueling true anarchy in the americas. i ended up dropping the sampling aspect and just focusing on the noise for the project's completion (inri079 ), so i'm going to upload these two pilot tracks (with the sampling in tact) as an introductory single and place them in this more topical chronological space.
in hindsight, i think there's something profound about juxtaposing the fair trade movement with the 9/11 attacks as, looking back, it really sucked the life out of the movement.

so, what happened?
i don't know. google hasn't communicated with me, yet. but, as before,
1) google told me what it did.
2) google reacted when i pushed back.
i suppose that it could be some kind of ploy to lead me down a path, but all evidence suggests google is on my side, here - even if it ends up being pontius-like, in the end.
rather, it seems like somebody else other than google is coming here, getting upset and flagging posts, and it is simply unclear at this point whether this is law enforcement or just some random moron that i don't care about, and have no interest in the opinion of.
whomever you are, get this through your head - i don't care what you think. i don't care whether you're offended. and, i have no intention of being silenced by you. go away....
but, tell me who you are - because as far as i'm concerned, you're a fucking coward. you sit there and hide behind your computer and tattle on me because i said some bad words. it's juvenile.

the way the system is designed is that any fucking retard can make any stupid accusation they want, and the system reacts first and then investigates after. and, then there's no consequences of making a false report.

so, that's completely ridiculous, and this is just google trying to shut me down, plain and simple.
i've been telling you for years that the intelligence agencies are keying in on me.
i suppose the truth is that i must have posted something that upset somebody in power, somewhere, and they tagged me as a hacker in retaliation.
but, what i need to do is cycle this machine and see if it makes a different.
earlier study: antibodies are only observed after a single dose of vaccine if a previous infection already occurred. so, you’re probably only immune after one dose if you were already immune anyways.
current study: more antibodies are produced by delaying the second dose than by sequencing the two doses in the manner that the science suggested would be most effective. so, the science was all wrong and the government got it right, after all. gee. how ‘bout that.
so, what’s the conclusion if you put these things together? is it:
1) you should wait longer between doses because your body reacts more aggressively if the doses are spaced in greater temporal distances, via some unknown mechanism that defies both reason and common sense or
2) people that wait longer between doses are more likely to catch the virus while they’re waiting, thereby stimulating the natural immunity that appears to be the most effective strategy in building immunity to any particular strain?
the media, no doubt via government prompting that is trying to justify the approach it was forced to take due to low supply, says (1). i might suggest that (2) is a far better hypothesis.
i’m not trying to argue that vaccination is pointless – i advise vaccinating yourself if you’re at risk. but, this is the time of year when flu shots stop working, and this first dirty run through a covid vaccine should be expected to be less effective than booster shots in future years will be.
and, from what i can see, the science is clear enough – while getting vaccinated is at worst probably a harmless placebo, chances are that you’re going to beat the initial collection of strains on your own, even if you do get vaccinated.
so, i’ll hold out a little longer, thanks.
greyhound is done in canada, which is going to be annoying in the short run but might work out in the long run.
the greyhound station in downtown windsor is also the city’s main bus station, including the start and stop point for the tunnel bus. i’d guess the city will have to buy it, but i doubt it wants to shell out the cash. i wonder if it can even just seize it.
the context is a little broader than the pandemic, though. ontario has recently announced plans to allow for competition in the intercity bus market (greyhound previously enjoyed a near monopoly), which is the kind of inefficient competition in the face of a natural monopoly that just leads to market failure – there’s simply not enough of an intercity bus market to allow for meaningful competition, nor would it be desirable to have competition in bus services, so you’re going to end up with ten unprofitable firms operating routes at 30% capacity, rather than one profitable firm operating at 80% capacity. it’s a typically economically illiterate decision by a typically economically illiterate provincial conservative party, but this one doesn’t even seem to be driven by corruption, as so many of them are – this is just dumb, flat out. this is what happens when you elect people that are driven by a backwards, irrational economic ideology that operates outside of empirical bounds. there may be a price drop in the short run for certain routes, if you can find a route at all, but it’s not going to be sustainable, and more likely is that most routes just won’t operate at all, because they’re just not profitable to operate. that’s the point of having the monopoly. so, in the end, we’re going to need to re-establish a monopoly with government subsidies if we want intercity public transport at all and this experiment with the inefficiency of markets in a natural monopoly will need to be undone. this is especially regressive in the face of the need to focus on less wasteful forms of transportation in the face of imminent catastrophic climate change. and, here in windsor, we might end up cut off from the rest of canada until the train gets extended here, and that could be upwards of ten or even twenty years.
it’s going to dramatically increase our reliance on detroit.
and, i’m probably going to need to get used to hitching if i want to get to toronto – including to appear in court.

an epic battle between the oceans and the vortex would be an interesting sound art project, wouldn’t it?
i’m closing my discography off in 2013, under the assumption that i‘ll be lucky to even get there, but what happens if i do? i should really go over all of this writing, in fact starting earlier than that, and start pulling out ideas to convert into sound art projects, and then date those properly.
in the end, my post-2013 sound art might be a soundtrack to this blog.
i had to crash this morning, but that was a more normal amount of sleep for me after what was three normal/”long” days. the weather is stabilizing and that always helps, with me – i’m most productive when it’s hot and humid out, and these pressure system rollercoasters just drive my insides haywire. we’ve been all over the place this spring, from record heat to frost advisories, which is reflective of the flux going on right now, where the oceans may be fighting a final, epic battle against the vortex, for the next hundred thousand years. the north will no doubt rise again, but our species may not survive long enough to see it.
so, i’m feeling a lot more “normal”, and i think whatever was wrong with me seems to be clearing itself up. i’m expecting more normal ferritin levels when i do the test on monday, but i can’t get cocky about it and need to follow through. it’s annoying, but i get it.
i got the blood lab in the mail yesterday, but i’m going to wait until early in the week to do it. i did not get the fit sheet in the mail yet, but that was only requested on tuesday. i’m going to cal the gastric specialist like now. i’m also going to call an imaging specialist back about doing a bone density test for osteoporosis.
the diet document is now updated to mid july 2020, and i want to focus on that for the day. it flips over to actual work on the issue in september, meaning the introductory chapter is going to end up being about 100 pages.
covid cases in ontario should indeed continue to fall with the rising temperatures, lockdown or not. but, i don’t expect substantive restrictions to lift until next spring. last summer wasn’t actually that bad here – unless your social lifeline happens to be concerts in small venues, across an international border..
i would be surprised if phog even opens at all before labour day.

that's the stark, actual reality - it's a system that sells false dreams of pop stardom to mostly talentless rich kids, while discarding anybody interested in the topic in an academic sense as unmarketable.
it really is reflective of the backwardsness of modern existence, though.
out of all of these kids in the class, i was probably the most interested in writing actual classical music - as one would expect from a first-year arts course, the class was half-filled with poptarts and half-filled with just rich kids that were flat out losers, all around.
and, what the school told me in not so many words was that it wasn't interested in students that were interested in being composers - it only wanted students that were interested in performing pop music.
