if you want peace with russia, you eliminate the sanctions as step one. maybe you don't get there overnight, but it's a necessary condition to start.
unless he wants to conquer russia and then call that peace?
has he looked at a map recently?
his position has no logic to it. like, i can't even critique it. it's just entirely incoherent to think that maintaining sanctions leads to an outcome of peace. if you seek to maintain the sanctions, you want to extend the conflict and you're just full of shit if you're claiming otherwise.
i have strongly opposed the international liberal foreign policy consensus for decades. i don't exactly agree with trump, but i support the fact that he's blowing up this consensus. this was one of the big reasons i could not endorse joe biden or kamala harris; i may have mildly (i want to stress mildly) preferred harris or biden on domestic issues, but trump was the distinctly less horrible choice than harris or biden on foreign policy issues, where the democrats have been the greater evil since the hillary clinton days (i give john kerry some credit for trying to reverse this, but he didn't succeed in the end). the democrats are the worse neo-cons than the republicans, who are nowadays more realpolitik. realpolitik is not good but it's less bad than neo-con. carney is just parroting the neo-con line on ukraine, and he's wrong. it's the wrong policy for canada, it's the wrong policy for the world and it's the wrong side of history.
on this issue, trump is right and carney is wrong - the path to peace with the russians is through economic normalization leading to a renewed detente. continuing the sanctions regime is an algorithm for endless conflict and war, and that is not in canada's self-interest. it is in canada's self-interest to make peace with the russian federation.
our cultural enemies are the muslims and the chinese, not the russians, who are our mirror reflection and our on-again off-again ally, when we need each other. we are going to need each other again to contain the chinese very soon. we need to get over the triviality on the dnieper and start to work together on more substantive concerns in containing the chinese, before it's too late.
