it's clearly not in alberta's self-interest to try to be independent, and that wouldn't appear to be a serious proposal. rather, "albertan independence" is really about becoming the 51st, or maybe 51st and 52nd, state. the americans would need to also absorb british columbia and at least a part of yukon for that to make any sense.

while alberta would be worse off, i would not be sorry to see them go. the country would instantly shit ten degrees to the left. we might not have to worry about conservatives winning office in canada for a generation or more, which would let more people vote for the ndp and greens. certain ideas - like recriminalizing abortion - would shift from third rail to nonexistent.

we would have a little less revenue in the short term, but our carbon emissions would go way down. we'd have to refocus on different energy strategies. it could result in a return to hydro generation. they won't sell the rest of canada the oil, anyways.

it might hurt a little financially in the short run but we would be better off without alberta in the medium to long term and while i would rather keep bc than lose it, we would be better off losing bc if it means losing alberta than having to keep alberta to hold bc.

it seems very unlikely, based on the polling.
