while i acknowledge that the science is not yet in on the effect of homosexual marriage or polygamous relationships on the social development of children, which i would consider to be functionally equivalent
a priori, and i'm willing to wait for the science to come in before officially recommending state action, i expect that i will ultimately support removing children from homosexual and polygamous situations and placing them in foster care with heterosexual and monogamous parents, to uphold normal social development and re-establish healthy societal norms. this is especially important for the children of recent immigrants, to socialize the children to monogamy and prevent the normalization of polygamy in canadian society.
the state should act strictly in the best interests of the child.
while i neither support homosexuality nor polygamy, and continue to have moral opposition to both behaviours, i would follow mill in refusing to criminalize either behavour, insofar as they relate to consensual behaviour involving adults. so long as children are not involved, i see no harm in consensual deviant sexual behaviour between adults. my interest in state intervention is related strictly to the science as it applies to the social development of children, and the state's responsibility to intervene in the best interests of the child.
