i went almost nowhere through most of the 00s, because i didn't like the kind of rock music that was popular at the time. that shifted around 2008 or so and all of a sudden there was more music that i liked showing up in more venues so i went out more. venues seemed more interested in booking more artistically interesting acts. i'm not going to pretend i fully understand why that shifted in the late 00s.
a part of it is no doubt just cyclical. i've posted before that i didn't like the music that was popular in the 80s or the 00s but did in the 90s and 10s. the 20s seem to be a rehash of the 00s, which i didn't like very much and thought of as a cultural lowpoint. on that level, it's not surprising that i'm bored with the events lists i'm seeing, and would rather stay in than go see some shitty 00s indie band or some boring folk music. i tend to like rock music that is more dissonant and dirty and experimental and abstract. that's not in style right now; what's in style is boring rolling stones style three chord rock bands with stupid vocals, which sucked in the 60s, and has sucked every time it has come back, since.....or pretentious twee-folk that is so goddamned boring that your grade 12 english teacher would like it (or might even be in the band). just like the 00s.
but it just seems different this time. it seems like something's broken and that there doesn't seem to be an appetite to fix it. it seems like people are happy with and want the status quo of low quality live music. that wasn't the case in the 80s or the 00s - people then were cognizant that the status quo sucked, whereas people today seem to have nostalgia for exactly the eras that i'm so heavily criticizing as low points.
