it's been the same back and forth since martel stopped the arab advance. i'm white, and i identify as white, but i know that white people are naive about non-white people. there have been periodic attempts at forcing integration, which just lead to further slave raiding. the whites can't understand that the arabs think they're an inferior race. they can't comprehend that the root of the problem is that the arabs are racist against them and that no amount of integration will resolve it. so, then, there are periodic attempts to fight back in response - from martel to napoleon III. it ebbs and flows, it swings back and forth. c'est la france.
geography is such that marseilles isn't far from carthage and hannibal will keep coming into perpetuity. you can't blame the french for wanting to get along, but you can blame them for being stupid and naive about it. you can't blame them for fighting back, when they do, either.
it's probably time for a swing towards the aggressive defence of french culture. right now, it looks like the bankers are what are standing in the way of that, as the french popular consensus shifts staunchly towards defense of the culture.
